2018 LS XJ2025H
I am in the market for a new tractor for a new property we are closing on mid September. I have decided the LS XJ2025H is the right tractor for me. I have two quotes, one for a used 2018 XJ 2025H with FEL and midmount mower with 55hrs for $13,300 and a new 2019 XJ2025H with FEL for $14,300 plus tax. I would also have to add a MMM.

I confirmed with LS the warranty on the used would transfer. Only other issue would be needing to find transport for the used one and storage until we close on the new place in September whereas new includes free delivery to the new place.

Thoughts? Is it a deal on the used one or not worth the difference for used with a year+ already gone on the warranty?

For just $1K, IMHO, I would go new, especially if that includes delivery. You didn't say if that was 1 mile or 100. With the new one, you will have it from day one, know exactly what has been done on / to the tractor, and just have that little extra piece of mind.

Was the used from a private seller or from a dealer? Private seller makes me wonder why they are selling it already. You also don't mention where you are located....prices vary considerably in different areas.

Good luck with your decision. Let us know.

Thanks for the reply. It is $1,000 + taxes on the new one ($930) + cost of a MMM on the new one. So it is more like a $3,000 to $4,000 difference. Trying to get a price on the new MMM for a comparison. I am in Central Ohio about 30mi from dealer. Private seller is moving and will not need it. I will have to move it twice and store it in-between, so that hassle plus a year or so less warranty and not being a brand new machine is the question or worth for $3-4K.

The thing to remember here, from your perspective- you have time on your hands and likely the seller does not. Pricing seems OK, it is a good percentage off, though for you to be convinced that it is a deal- you could use a little more distance between new$ and used price + storage , depreciation etc. Really at 55 hours if it looks good it probably is. It is due for the 1st oil change and hydro filter service now. On this tractor, look at the engine oil dipstick hasn't been vibrating out / covered w/ dirt and that the muffler isn't cracked. Power train warranty is 6 years, the "bumper to bumper" is 2 I believe.

Think about whether a MMM is the right choice for you first. I had one on my old JD855 and never used it. For some tractor uses, the mmm should be removed and that can become a PITA in the summer when you are mowing regularly. It depends on how easy the mmm is to take off and put on.

In my case, with only about 2 acres to mow, I will be getting a ZT in the $3500-4000 range once my Husqvarna rider either bites the dust or I want a new toy.

As to your question, I would get the used one if I could save $4k. That saving can be used to buy attachments to increase the usefulness of your tractor.

Yes, if the 'final' price difference is 3-4k, definitely the used one would be worth it. The MMM costs at least 3K. If you don't like it, you could always take it off and get a RFM, you'll still be ahead. Tomplum had a few things to look at. Being just a year old, you still have a year left on the bumper to bumper warranty, so there is time to get any things fixed (probably none to fix anyway).

Why don't you contact your dealer and tell him about the used one you found. Ask if he could pick it up, perform the 50 hour service, then store it until you want it and make the final delivery. I'm guessing this should all be able to be done for less than $1000. That still puts you $3000 to the good. That money could go toward implements.

Have both been negotiated down as far as possible? Will dealer throw in any service or freebies on the new one, will they pick up the machine for warranty work, all value there. For 7% difference Id buy the new. I would also highly think about a MMM on a tractor like that

Haven't negotiated with either. More of a apples:apples asking price question. I did get the price on the same new model with the midmount mower, and we're talking a total of $3,500 difference after tax or 20% difference.

What do you mean by the "I would also highly think about a MMM on a tractor like that?". Are you suggesting the MMM isn't a good idea? I was steered by the forum towards a MMM on a tractor this size for my needs of establishing a lawn around the house and grass seeding further out on 3.5 acres of old farm land. Suggestion was this size tractor would be the right fit, and a MMM would be preferable to a RFM given the mowing around the house.

Great thought. I did chat with the dealer, and they'd pick up from the seller and do the service for me, and then deliver to my brother-in-law's for the 1.5mos storage. Total difference in price between the used vs. new is $3,500 after they do the service.
