LS Tractor Won't Start After Hooking Up Bush Hog

/ LS Tractor Won't Start After Hooking Up Bush Hog #41
Just got inside. After tapping starter with hammer while my wife turned the key, it started right up. Ground cable is clean, took it off anyhow, filed it a bit, plus the frame, still did nothing. Reminds me of my 77 Ford Supercab, had to hit the starter on it too.

Needs new starter, solenoid?
Starter is 40334005
Here is a listing with other compatible numbers both LS and NH so you can shop if you want

DB Electric is a reliable vendor, I have used them a bunch

You may be able to disassemble and clean the solenoid, and maybe lightly lubricate the plunger. Inspect the contacts as well.

That's weird, a MT242H isn't that old so it shouldn't have starter problems already, but if it works after hitting it with a hammer, it does sound like possibly a starter problem. But first make sure the connections on the starter are clean and tight. I have seen the flat push on connector on the small wire that energizes the solenoid not fit on tight enough and cause an intermittent no crank problem. Sometimes after leaving it sit for a while it started, but then happened again later just like yours. When I pulled the wire off to check it, it pulled off with almost no effort so I squeezed it with pliers so it pushed on tighter and the problem was gone for good. Possibly tapping with a hammer is making the loose connection work while cranking. LS tractors are not known for problems with the starters (although nothing is impossible). My dealer only saw one that needed a replacement and that tractor was 10 years old. Good luck and please let us know what you find. If the starter is bad, it would fall under the 2 year bumper to bumper warranty. That's what they call it even though they don't have bumpers 🤔

Seems like you just got that machine, I have 750+ hours so far (knocks on wood). Still under warranty?
No, this thing is ancient, already has 22 hours on it! ;)

(I ain't happy about that either, lolzzz)

Thing is, it's under warranty, but I could do it myself and save money probably versus taking it in and having them do it then bringing it back. I mean, if they give me the starter and solenoid.

Thanks for all that info, btw!

Good info, I'm going to take a look at that wiring. Perhaps Dohyun is the guy installing the starters over there, and needs to get it together!

Looking at that starter, and knowing how it is located on the block, looks like it should be easy to get to the nuts and tighten them down if they are loose.

Call service manager, explain situation. They may just give you a starter if they believe you're competent and willing. They'll likely need the old one back for warranty claim, though.

Thanks, that's a good idea. Tomorrow, if I get time, I'll check the wires to see of the nuts are tight on the solenoid.

Today was the first time I have used the brush mower, and I have to say it was fun doing it.

Some tractors have a pto seat switch, or so I have been told. Yiu can start the tractor standing next to it. Have to be in the seat to engage pto.

I may have missed this, but if you disconnect the PTO, does it start?
I believe my PTO can be on and as long as the brake is on (and hydro pedals are centered so switch is made) I can exit the seat or even start the pto from the ground not even in the seat. This is how it would need to work for a wood chipper to operate.

Check/clean the ground cable connection to the frame. The LS's are notorious for bad contact there. Check/clean/tighten/replace the clamps on the posts (marine terminals or milspec are good alternatives to what LS uses). Check the Hot cable 100 amp main fuse. (plastic cover on metal bracket just off the battery + post) Mine was corroded & doing random no starts/voltage drops (showing 5 volts at fuse panel w/good 12.4 at battery). My fix was to replace the cables, fuse & terminals, but I was out of warranty at the time.
