At least I think it is loud. Don't really have a point of reference since this is my first real tractor. Do most SCUT HST whine? It doesn't seem bad, just louder than anyhting else on the tractor. Is this normal? BTW all fluids are full and topped off.

Yeah, they really whine, worse than an over tired 3 year old!:D:D

Couple things you can do. First, warm it up. Generally, they get a little quieter as they warm up. Second, a bit of this takes getting used to. The BX is a whiner. Just is.

Finally, do check your concrete floor, where you park your tractor. After doing an hour of solid work, let it sit in the same spot every time. If you should find some spots of drips, you can look to find a hydraulic line leak. Not saying you have any, but if you do, boy, it'll whine even worse. Also check your HST dip stick immediately after working the machine, while it is till hot. Check it quickly. Are there any air bubbles in it? These are signs of an air leak.

Thanks bp, I have three kids and am trying to get on the tractor to get away from the whining:laughing:

It will whine louder the harder you work the HST.

I am not sure how many speed ranges you have; with my L3400 I have L- M H range.

I use the lowest range that will get me the highest speed that I want. For example, if I am in a field where the ground is rough, low range will move me as fast as I want to go so I use low range.

The lower range that you use the less strain on the HST and the less whine.

Good luck

Mine is not as noticeable as it was when brand new. It now has about 30 hours on it. I do not have the BX however.

Thanks for the response. It is still new, only 18hrs, and yes the brake is off. I did read a thread the other day that some people were driving with the parking brake on, mine doesn't move at all with the brake on.

I have 2 kids and a wife...I prefer the whine of my BX...

They do whine. Some a bit more than others and more in the higher range.

My BX2660 whines more than my BX2200 did, my JD2305 doesn't whine much and neither does my L5030. Some just simply whine more than others, no real worries.

Can you tell how hot the fluid is getting when you give it a good workout? (Checking the temperature of the lines to the FEL is the easiest)
It's normal for it to get pretty hot (150-180 deg, I think), but if the lines are blisteringly hot to the touch (say, 200+), it suggests either you are overworking it somehow or there is a problem somewhere in the system... maybe just needs new fluid/filters, maybe something more serious. Do you know if the hydraulic fluid is fresh and the filters have all been changed? With an HST, having fresh juice seems to help.

With the BX, you need to keep the revs up... it's designed to run with the throttle wide open to produce its rated hydraulic flow. If you run it at lower rpm, it works the hydraulics harder and tends to whine more... at least mine is like that. Also, be sure to use low range for any work that loads up the transmission for the same reason... like loader work, pulling the box blade, etc. Besides, with the engine revved up, the whine isn't so noticeable :D:D:D

One of those funny things: The whine COULD be a good thing.

My brother installed a Saleen supercharger on his '05 Mustang...actually drove it to Steve's shop in SoCal and had it done on their regular production line.

He was talking to one of the technicians and asked how much noise it would make. The technician laughed and said that he's actually replaced installed superchargers because people complained they were TOO loud. Thing is that if a [Roots type] supercharger is loud, that means the tolerances are tighter, meaning it is achiving more efficient compression which, in turn, relates to higher pressures and better performance.

Like I said: I have no clue what that has to do with a HST in your BX, but if there aren't crunching sounds, I'd call it good.
