Hello Everyone!

I have a 18 y/o Snapper riding mower which has given me no problems until today. I can offer more specs if needed. When I shut off the ignition this afternoon, there was a continuous loud humming/buzzing noise coming from the engine compartment which only stopped after I disconnected the battery. It must have been the starter making the noise as I can't think of what else near the engine would run on after engine shut down. I did some searching and only similar situation had to do with the starter solenoid. I am clueless so I hope someone can guide me in this situation as I have to repair this myself, can't afford service agent but I am very clever when it comes to fixing things. Today was over 100 degrees if that has any influence on the problem. I am thankful in advance for any troubleshooting advice that may come my way.
Thanks!

P.S. The mower is an LT160H42CBV2
I have also posted this in the Snapper forum but the Snapper forum doesn't seem to get much traffic.

I appreciate the hundreds of views to my question even though I received no replies. Just wanted to follow up in case anyone else has this problem. Testing revealed that the starter solenoid was the culprit, probably stuck contacts. New solenoid ordered and on the way. Thank you.

Glad to hear you found the problem, because I didn't have an answer and can only guess no one else did either.

Good job figuring it out. Happened to me in college once on my Ranger. Very annoying when having to find a solenoid on a weekend in small town Oklahoma. Any clicking or buzzing like that is indeed a solenoid on these simpler machines.

Thank you Bird and Snowback for your replies, I don't feel so alone any more. I'm glad I figured it out, not bad for a 64 y/o woman. ;)

My only thought was low oil sensor but have never heard one and had no idea if it buzzes, flashes the light on control panel or shuts of the engine.
So you beat this 63 y/o male.

Hi kthompson, This noise was pretty loud, I ran off to find a wrench to disconnect the battery so did not investigate exact location of noise but it must have been the starter running on continually. Glad nothing was broken as a result. Thanks!!

Hey Littlebuddie,

I just wanted to tell you thank you for pting that follow up. I have my dad's 15 year old Snapper zero turn lawn tractor that I use to pull a wagon with my garden tools around my property. A few weeks ago it the exact same thing, made a humming noise and wouldn't crank. I did not want to spend a lot of money on the mower since i dont actually use it to mow, so i wanted to see if i could figure out the issue myself. Your post was the only one I found with a similar problem and your follow up was the only answer I found. And it was correct! $16 for a start solenoid and a few YouTube videos and I'm back in business. So thank you so much.
