Lost my senses of taste and smell!

So this is a new one. I got a terrible sinus and chest cold about a month ago. It's still lingering a bit but one day about half way through the ordeal, I suddenly lost almost all of my sense of taste and I've lost all of my sense of smell.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did it come back? I can barely taste some things now such as salt and sugar, but barely. And I can't taste other things at all, examples are spices. It is so bizarre.

I will be surely bummed if I have lost these senses forever.

I think they will come back gradually. I have experienced this. You need time lapse to really notice it. Hang in there ...

I've had similar problems with sinus and chest congestion twice since February. Both times I found only the most spicy foods could be tasted. Of course, my throat was also irritated and hot foods could be felt, but not tasted.:confused3:

Look for opportunity in every adversity....Now would be the time to look for an extremely high paying job cleaning Sewers...or Tasting otherwise foul tasting foods.....Just a thought....:2cents:

Same thing here but it's coming back. We had some sort of sinus or chest cold-lung flu thing and two months later are only now getting back to normal. I've been spicing things up far hotter than normal and it barely phases me.

Are you on any medications? I ask, because my father-in-law went on cholesterol medication and slowly lost his sense of taste and smell. Check with your doctor.

I experienced this about a decade ago, in one day... after I used Zicam for allergies. I contacted the company a couple of days later with "... is this just me or are others having this problem?" but got no reply. I have not got my smell or taste back yet (it's only "partially" gone.. I cannot smell excrement, skunks, propane, bacon and coffee cooking, and many other things.... I've joked that my next job should be with a septic pumping company. I have reduced smell and taste for other things).

Those two Zicam products (cold and allergy) were recalled a few years ago after the FDA raided the company headquarters and found hundreds of unreported problems with this. There were also a lot of class action lawsuits but it'd already been over three years for me and I was told 'too bad'.

Good replies, Brin, you may have an idea! I read jerrybob's link also and figure it must be from the virus I had. I don't take med's and am going to the doctor next Wed. anyhow so hopefully it is temporary.

Jinman, like you I can eat a pile of spicy stuff, don't taste a thing but can feel the burn. And the, erm, aftereffects....ahem...
