BX23
Make a long story short my BX23 has been randomly losing power, then running fine again over the last year. Not much of a pattern to it just whenever it felt like it, but it got real bad last month. Most of my searching here said replace the fuel filters. My neighbor told me to replace the fuel filters. I was in doubt a filter would cause the random power losses.:eek:
So last Thursday I decided this had to be fixed.. hmmm where to start.. how about the fuel filters... It ended right there also  and there was much :dance1::cool2::drink:

Sorry I doubted your suggestions in the first place, I definitely proved I don't know everything and sometimes don't even have a clue:eek:

My 480 hour BX23 runs like brand new again.
Thanks guys, beverages are on me... just stop by..:drink:

Filter pics below, click them to see the grunge full up. Sad to say these are the originals. For some reason I thought they were on a 500 hour maintenance schedule.

If you got 480 hours out of them be happy, be very happy. I went through three or four filters in less than 100 hours using the junk fuel sold at stations here in northern, IL. Finally worked a deal with the farmer neighbor and buy my fuel from him. Problem solved.

Thanks for the update. I guess I should be thankful the fuel filters on the MF and JD I can see the media and what is inside the filter container.

Yipes! What sort of fuel are you using? I changed my filters at around 300 hrs they were so clean that I wondered why I did it.
Glad you sorted your loss of power problem.

This was my first diesel and in the early years I didn't know the fuel could be so so dirty and never paid much attention to where I was buying it from. When I got the Powerstroke diesel I learned alot more on diesels and where to buy fuel and not store it for months on end. The last couple of years the BX has always had fresh truck stop fuel, but the first few years my fuel may be up to 4 months old or more and coming from a gas station that did very little diesel business and virtually no big trucks fueled there.
On a side note I do change the oil and other filters more than the schedule says to. I just neglected the fuel part. Bad bad Hoot.

That was definitely due to some very bad fuel. Looks like a lot of rust and perhaps a bit of algae mixed in for good measure. I would warn others in the area about that service station if you are sure that is it. They look to be selling as much water and rust as fuel. That is one reason I buy in bulk and run the fuel from my bulk tank thru a 10 micron filter as I pump it in with my 15 GPM DC pump with auto-shutoff nozzle. It don't get any better than that, although now my distributor want 250 gallon (up from 200) minimum purchase now and I don't have the capacity for that at the moment.

Man, you got your moneys worth out of those filters. I've had power issues with mine also and its always been the filters. Usually just the rear one. I've cut mine open and they didn't look anywhere near that bad. You might want to dump some algaecide in your tank just in case.

When I bought my BX22 the dealer advised me to only buy diesel from specific dealers. I guess he knew what he was talking about. On a related note, I know guys who buy gasoline for their power tools at the local airport. They claim aviation grade fuel is higher quality than normal gas station fuel and will last much longer when stored.

Gas for aircraft at the airport doesn't have Ethanol in it. It's hard to coast to a safe stop in an airplane when the engine quits from ethanol Corroding the fuel system. But its ok for us ground travelers to use government mandated bad fuel.
