As Harry said pull the suction strainer. But dump the oil that's in it. Now that you know the oil was used you have no idea what you put back in it. I wouldn't risk any further damage. Get the right oil, a new spin on filter and probably a back up spin on for later and drain everything you can. We had a rule of thumb at work. Of course our systems were much larger but if it wouldn't hold at least a 5 gallon bucket full of hydraulic then it wasn't low. It was a recipe to get water or other contaminants in a system. At this point you are working to prevent losing the pump and travel motor. Hopefully the screen stopped any large stuff from reaching the pump. Did you hear anything unusual when it stopped moving? Pump cavitation is pretty distinct sounding and somewhat high pitched whine. It can sound like marbles or gravel going through it if it gets bad enough. It is also death to a pump if lasts very long.
