Looking to purchase project 212

I have been looking for an older 3 series or possibly a 430 for quite sometime, but came across a 212 that appears to be in decent shape, haven't seen in person yet but I mainly want it for the tractor, not the mower but a good deck is a plus. The paint looks good and of course a torn seat but cosmetically it's in real good shape.

What I don't know what to look for is in the mechanical areas. I know It does have the electric PTO and I believe no hydraulics. Motor smokes a little when cold but no knock. I may be able to pick up for about $175 so it seems like a good deal but would like some opinions.

I would use this for pulling a cart or small trailer, snow blade, mainly the heavier chores that wear on a smaller hydro lawn tractor.

Is this worth fixing up or should I look for another series? I have been looking at the sub $500 range mainly for a beater but surely if a good price on a 3 or 4 series comes along I will consider it.

As long as you understand the variable speed drive and can keep it tuned in, then it should be a great workhorse for you.
In good shape (i.e. running shape), they go for $500 to $750 around here. $175 is a very good deal. Buy a new seat and you should be good to go.

Are belts and pulleys/ bearings readily avail from JD for the variable speed? Also has anyone repowered this model without needing extensive fabrication? I would imagine minor mods for anything other than stock. Also, how much motor can the driveline take? Could I make a 15-18 HP motor work without tearing anything up? Granted this is if the OE motor is in need of a full overhaul.

I would highly recomend an stx38. It is four times the unit the 212 is and i can find you one for 500$ cash plus transport fee. :laughing:

Mower deck usually sells for 250 if not ruined by rust. So you sell the deck and enjoy the free tractor.
