Hi,

I bought a 2014 MAX 26 XL HST TLB and wanted some tips on trailers? Does it need to have four chains for tie downs? I know in Mass, the DOT has some strict rules about trailers.

Thanks in advance

David

The only thing I will advise is to make sure the trailer is long enough so you can position the tractor fore/aft however needed to get the balance and tongue weight right. For a small TLB, I think that means 16' minimum, and possibly more like 18' if the backhoe stays on all the time. That adds a lot of weight to the rear of the tractor and adds a lot of length. It's no longer a small payload at that point.

I see an awful lot of people cramming tractors onto short trailers, and in that case, it is what it is. If the balance or tongue weight is wrong, there is no way to correct it and it will tow like crap (and possibly be unsafe). You really need at least 4-6' extra length on the trailer to accommodate balancing.

No chains are needed in Ma.

2.5 -3 inch wide nylon straps are fine. I've been pulling trailers with cars on them in Ma for 45 years this way.

Some states may have more restrictive laws but federally you need a minimum of two tie downs for machines up to 10,000lb and four minimum for things over 10,000lb. The law doesn't specify chain or straps just that it has to have sufficient WLL. Personally I use chains on anything larger than a four wheeler. I guess it boils down to personal preference as both are legal but chains are so much better in many ways.

As to the trailer you shouldn't have any problem fitting it in a dump trailer. I hauled my M59 in a gooseneck dump trailer.
