I recall about 10 years ago helping put a rear discharge mower on a Deere CUT. Believe it was a special order deal for a Deere customer who didn't want side discharge. I'm sure it was a MMM Deere 62 or 72". They were made for ROW work and more the commercial line than the homeowner.
But the customer was very dis-satisfied with the results and coughed up the money to replace it with side discharge. That is the best that I remember the situation, mainly that the mowing job was not good with rear discharge (and the dealer had a rear discharge that was hard to sell).

There are some of the 3-pt mowers that are rear discharge.

I am curious what the advantage is of a rear discharge over a side discharge.

Mow close to objects on both sides of the deck, and keep from throwing grass and debris out the side. Couple of advantages anyway.

I am curious what the advantage is of a rear discharge over a side discharge.

Here are a few. Cutting thick tall grass with a side discharge creates piled high windrows of grass you have to deal with. If your grass is damp you end up plugging your restricted side discharge chute. PITA. Rear discharge displaces the grass evenly behind you. Much better for dealing with thick tall grass. Much better for evenly spreading grass clippings. No chute clogging. Able to cut very close to obstacles on both sides without making a mess on either side. Safer to operate as rear discharge can be equiped with a chain guard to stop projectiles from exiting.

i have a rear discharge john deere 72" 3 pt mower. but lots of things to mow around and fence etc.

i have to say, the new holland attracts me because the MMM has a rear discharge. dont think any other brand does.
