First off I did not mention anyone by name because I will not and cannot speak ill of another dealer of whom I know nothing about. I apologize for each and everyone of you whom have had a bad experience with VN. Part of the reason for my post was to question the problems people have had as I am by no means an expert or anything and am always looking to learn new things. All I can speak for is my own dealings with them and no other. Perhaps I have been lucky but the tractors I have sold from them have been good tractors. That is not to say there haven't been minor issues because there has. But overall I have been happy with them. Again my reason for posting was more along the lines or education and to impart my experiences with them. One thing that has kept me off forums in the past is the lack of respect people seem to have often time people will say things in print they would not say in person. I will always be respectful in my post and hope that anyone who would respond will do the same. Thanks and God Bless.

283 I was in no was speaking ill of the Dealers you wrote of. Perhaps I was unclear on what I wrote and I apologize for that. And perhaps I spoke out of turn with regards to the practices of the guys that import tractors from Japan. All I can say is that the tractors I have sold have been sound and VN has stood behind me on any issues a tractor may have had. I am certainly not a cheerleader for VN if I knew how to import from Japan on my own or had the time I might do that and cut out the middle man. Also I would especially never speak ill of Hoye I often purchase parts from those guys and they are great.

I know you didn't mention any dealers by name. In a way, that made it sound worse. When you said "What has happened is the Vietnamese exporters started offering a better product at a lower price and would not deal with the guys importing them on their own hence the bad reviews," it went against the grain of the experiences of members here. California shared a story of a company that literally went out of business by doing the right thing by its customers. A similar thing has happened (is happening?) with Chinese tractor retailers: They have so much time involved in setting up and fixing issues on NEW tractors from the factory that it is no longer cost effective for them to sell these things. The alternative is to sell a customer a sub-standard, faulty machine.

I am glad that is not the case with you or your business. It may be that your importer has better or more quality assurance steps to limit some of the problems these other companies have had. I would be interested to hear about them.

The short explanation of the situation is that there has been an established history of retailers selling tractors reconditioned in Vietnam to appear "as new," but from an aggregation of parts that may be from different models or even brands. Problems did (and do) occur with these tractors at rates much higher than would be expected with used tractors in general, let alone (in aviation terms) a machine with zero time since major overhaul.

Perhaps the situation is changing. What types of issues have you seen? Are some machines more reliable for your customers than others? I don't think people expect perfection. Brand new machines go back for warranty work all the time. Indeed, having a warranty is a selling point, even though warranties only work when something malfunctions! So implicit there is the idea that something probably will go wrong. The duration of a warranty is frequently a perception of quality, that tends to be influenced by the reality of things.

Hyundai used to be regarded as low-quality, disposable automobile manufacturer. However, offering 10 year warranties on their cars made people feel confident buying them: "How bad could they be, if they will be warranteed for 10 years? Plus, I don't have to pay to fix it if it does break." With that psychological reassurance, the company has grown to be a reasonably well-regarded builder of automobiles.

Yanmar's reputation for quality is pre-existing. As a result, when things enter the supply stream that don't meet those expectations, the attention paid to them is much greater than with a product of expected low quality. If I break a socket out of a set that cost 3 dollars at the swap meet, I am not surprised. When I broke my 26 dollar Snap-on socket, I was irate. I paid the extra money for something that wouldn't give me trouble. I could have paid a third that price for a Craftsman, and gotten a replacement that afternoon at K-Mart or Sears. Instead, I had to wait a week for the truck to come by, within certain hours, and so forth. I was angry about the extra cost combined with the added inconvenience: The "better" product cost more, and the trouble involved was more to boot.

Buying a Yanmar for most people here is like buying the Snap-on. If I'm not going to get much help fixing it, I might as well buy Chinese, or used, or whatever. A reconditioned Yanmar ought to be new in every way that matters except serial number date, and give about the same rate of trouble as a new tractor of top-quality (Kubota, John Deere, etc.) would, and of similar magnitude.

Would you say that's applicable in your situation? 4 years should be long enough to get a feel for what is having issues and of what type.

If I said something that you felt mischaracterized your statements, I am sorry. I tried to keep my remarks centered on what was in your posts. I have no beef with the ethnicity of the guy who rebuilds my tractors. The 1401D is my favorite machine I own, and the one I would keep if I had to choose amongst them. I do want the best product for my money. And, all too often, that has not been the collective experience with Vietnamese rebuilds.

For what it's worth, I speak about like I write, and would have said the same things to you after waiting patiently with my hand raised. (I'm a teacher, it's ingrained habit....:laughing:)

Well again as for Leon I do not know the man and I will not make escuses for his actions. But the only ones who know the facts in the case are Leon, the guys that was stabbed and the courts. I find it irresponsible to spread rumor and inuendo about a man that cannot defend himself. Tiffany runs the place now, and to my knowledge and she has always been fair and honest in my dealings her. Again I do not escuse the actions of Leon but I also know very few here have the whole truth of the situation which is why it is best not to speak of it. This is the last I will speak on the situation and I hope everyone here understands my position.

TractorErnie you speak of character...I agree honesty and integrity is all a person has in this world. Before joining my fathers tractor business I was a police officer for 8 and a half years. I have been around all types of people...good and bad. I can tell you from experience people make bad decisions in the heat of the moment. I used to be of the opinion once a con always a con but recently my attitude has changed. I would rather see the good in people rather then the bad. This is why you will never read a post of mine that I intentionally speak negatively about someone unless I have all the facts.

Kenmac in my experience with forums often times people feal imboldened to make comments they would not say in person. Craigslist help forums are a prime example people cannot seem to answer a question without name calling or some other childish behavior.

Anyway I hope to learn from you all and gather as much info as I can. If I can be of anyhelp to any of you dont hesitate to give me a yell.

Cwrighttractors, it's great to have you here. You sound like the kind of person and dealer anyone would want in their town.

Having issues like leaky seals, headlights burn out, or leaky loader seals would be on the minor end of things, in my view. The fact that you haven't had engine, hydraulic, or drivetrain trouble seems to indicate that the quality of your machines is higher than those of other dealers.

Having said that, you have had to reject some tractors as being not up to scratch. I wonder where those units go.

What models are you primarily selling? Do you get dealer information on these grey market units?

In the Yanmars I mainly sell the YM models from like 18hp to 50. In the Mitsubishi line I like the D and MT models of the same HP. I really like the Yanmar F and FX series but they seem to be a little high.

As for the few tractors I have rejected I know that 2 have gone to the bone yard and the good parts have been sold as used. Im not sure on the others they may have simpy fixed the issue and sold them to another dealer. Often times the reason I rejected them was not something real major I just did not want to invest the time and money to fix something that should have been right before it was shipped.

As for dealer information I guess I dont understand what you are asking.

If cwrighttractors is the dealer I bought my tractor from in Oklahoma City, I can say I think I got a fair deal on mine. I have abused my 1401D for about 100 hours now since I got it in July and the only part I have had to replace was the thermostart plug that I realized wasn't working when the weather got colder. cwrighttractors, are you the dealer on NE 23rd? I'm thinking that may be you because of the name and your mention of being a police officer. I bought mine from Wright Tractors. I am a happy customer.

I was unclear in my question about "dealer information." Do you get dealer service manuals, specification packages, or other information on the tractors, or do you have to get data on machines for yourself?

Nah the information I have is pretty much based off experience and what my supplier tells me. I think I am going to start ordering manuals for the tractors I have in inventory for when I make a sale but these manuals are not always available in English as I am sure you are aware.

It's too bad the importers/suppliers don't provide their retailers with some of those things, or compile them. I wonder if some of the complaints about dealer service (not from you, just generally) that we've heard here could have been reduced or even altogether avoided if the dealers had service manuals and specification packages and parts manuals available as references. Are you able to provide owner's manuals with the reconditioned machines you sell?
