Looking for a period correct rifle scope.

At less than 100 yards, wouldn't the peep sight be more accurate (or no less) than a scope sight of that era? And, has this anything to do with the shooter's actually eye ability?

The neighbor has a old (his dad's) Winchester .22 lever action with a old small diameter scope. I cleaned and lubed the gun and cleaned the scope. I then sited it in by running a box of shells through it. Why o why would someone chose to use a scope like that on a gun nowadays?

Peep sights can be used at long ranges. But not with my eyes and the sort of aperture you need for shooting game in the woods. The scopes then were perfectly accurate they just did not gather light as well for lower light conditions and the objective diameters were not as large as they are now. But yes, for hunting a scope with some magnification would tend to be a lot more accurate than a peep sight.

Maybe the same reason I am? Just for fun. Nostalgia. The challenge. I've killed plenty of deer and whether I kill another one isn't so much of a concern that I need optimum gear (which I also have). On my place (heavy woods) I rarely get a shoot more than 150 yards and the majority have been under 50. A decent scope with 4x to 6x is all you really need for what I do anyway. So a decent 1950's to 1960's scope would perfectly fine for the times I decide to shoot one which would likely be less than 75 yards anyway. I've also gotten to the point that I'm not going to shoot if it isn't a money shot and somewhere I won't have to drag it far.

AAh-h- "Yes", how I've forgotten. Using the peep site in the woods is almost impossible for anything that is moving. I have a 1940's Mossberg GI Model in 22 cal with a peep site. Dad bought it for me when i was about 12 yo. It weighed in at about 9 lbs, which in itself is heavy for a kid that weighed in just over 100 lbs. But as a target rifle it was superb. I never really enjoyed hunting after my Dad died.
Cheers,
Mike

There are lots of vintage scopes on Ebay... I'd like to get a long tube Unertl 10x...

Just did a search on Ebay for "Vintage rifle scope"; tons of them listed.

Here is an update: I found a Lyman All American 6x from a reputable dealer on eBay. It has some scratches on the outside but otherwise looks good. Seller says optics are perfect. $200.

It should look right on the gun, for what that's worth. Another nice thing is that it has a 1" tube so I've got plenty of rings and bases for it.

Update, got the scope on the gun. Looks great and 'period correct'. I know that it is kind of silly, but I've got my other 'functional' deer rifles with fiber glass stocks and modern scopes. I kind of like having this old school combo in what is really a fine rifle even though it is a "Sears" brand.

For any of you old school Mauser loving types, keep an eye out for this rifle. Because it is a Sears, J.C. Higgins model, most people don't know what they actually have and they can be had for fairly cheap, or you could a few years ago. You could also put it in a custom wood stock and it would be a fine rifle.

The weather is cool here so I'll sight it in tomorrow.
