A minor point of clarification, the 990 is built entirely by Yanmar, not just the engine. Not a bad thing, they are well made machines.

Is the case with the 3x20 series as well? I know that they have a Yanmar engine but thought they were built by Deere.

I know that this is the case with the 790 also but am curious about the 3x20.

I think the 3x20 series is an entirely different animal than the 790. Maybe someone more knowledgeable on JD can clarify?

The x50, x70, and x90 machines are 100% Yanmar. I owned a US35 Yanmar once. Other than being red and having more PTO speeds, it was a duplicate of a 990.

Dave is correct - the 3x20 series is totally different from the 790/990. 3x20 models are JD designed and built tractors with Yanmar engines. 790/990 are built entirely by Yanmar. FWIW, the 4x20 series is a JD designed and built tractor with a JD designed and built engine, as are all larger JD tractors that I know of. Although this is all a bit academic as both JD and Yanmar do an excellent job at building both tractors and engines...

Interesting that JD didn't go out and build an engine for the 3x20 series. I imagine that this was the same for the 4310s, 4300s etc. (i.e. Yanmar engine but built by JD).

By all accounts the 3x20 series seems to be selling really well. There is a good supply on the used market of these as well.

Just curious as to why JD doesn't make their own engines for these - the market seems to be there.

Only speculating but maybe Yanmar made an offer too good to refuse.

We often think of JD for CUTs and lawnmowers, but really most of their market is big farming and construction machinery with engines 3-15 liters displacement. They also do a fair bit of forestry machinery, same size range. I think the small stuff is certainly profitable for them (certainly!) but not their main focus.
