I have recently purchased a Mahindra Max 28XL and am looking for a smaller drop lime spreader for food plot preparation. Thanks

Thank you. I have been to this site numerous times, but just now became member. I have found very good info on this site.

Pardon me for asking this but what does the lime do? Neutralize the pH?

The lime is used to neutralize the pH of the soil. The soil that we have is very acidic and we need to apply lime to it to improve the soil quality.

Best place to look is either on craigslists or ebay. I believe that one of the vendors in Ky Sweet Tractors sells them as well. They are definitely harder to find and have found a current resurgence in price and interest from food plotters. I know Ground Hog and Gandy still sell drop spreaders but they are pretty pricey for a unit. While being expensive you can recoup your costs pretty quickly over the cost difference over spreading pelletized lime.

I picked up an old john deere FB spreader on craigslist for 200 dollars that I strictly for lime and in no way will I ever sell it. It paid for itself the first time I used it from spreading bulk lime at 10 dollars a ton vs. 4 dollars for 50# of pelletized. The cost difference adds up quickly.

Ok thanks for the info. I can find some that are close to me, but are pretty big. I'm not sure how hard they are to cut down as pulling 10 feet through the woods would be pretty difficult. Thanks again.

I looked at some new ones sized for smaller tractors- can't remember the brand name, but ouch! If I remember right the pricing started at a couple thousand dollars and went up.

I know. I have looked at Groundbuster and Gandy. There are others as well, but the prices are still pretty steep.
