I've been searching without success for a good lawn dethatcher that attaches to the 3pt hitch of my BX24. I can find the hundred dollar tow behinds that Lowes and Home Depot carry, but there has to be a quality, 3pt hitch version out there. Any recommendations?

Get a small Flail mower with dethatch blades. Kind of expensive but it would work really well.

a core aerator would be more useful I believe

Ahh...got one already! I want the dethatcher primarily to lift the long white pine needles that have woven their way into the grass like a mat. They blow off the surrounding trees each spring when they shed, and you can never get them all up. Once they are in the thatch, even a vacuum won't pick them up.

agreed, there really isn't a good substitute for a good dethatcher.

i got my 3 pt model used from a local tractor dealer. it was home made. looks really easy to make. it's just a rectangular box of tubing whatever width you want with 3 point bracket mounted to top. tines are whatever cheap and easy to find baler tines you can pick up at the local tractor supply store.

i'll try to post a pic when i get back home.

Jabroni,
I have plans from one of our late members on how to build your own if interested. I'm sure MadReferee would not object with me sharing them. Just PM me with your email address and make sure your email will accept a PDF file.

I'd be interested in those plans also.
Would it be ok if I PMed you also?

I bought this on a auction back in 04. Its angle iron and hay rake teeth. Its 5' wide and weighs I would say around 50 lbs? It does work good.

Inspector, any reason you couldn't just post those plans on here. Simply attach the .pdf? Thanks,

if i'm not mistaken "linebauh" (check spelling) makes a "pine straw rake" that would be perfect

Thanks for that. Leinbach Machinery is the place. Yes, that's exact what I need....and located right near my sister too. Maybe a trip is in order....but those plans look very interesting too. Thanks...here's the link.

Being an ex-yardcare pro, I would definitely go with a rake. Thatching stirs up lots of dormant broadleaf weeds, and makes it easy for them to take over the grass.

Don't think TBN will allow an upload of 1.2MB PDF file.

you may want to look at a harrow rake, I use it to dethatcher the fields and it work fine. I believe to use a dethatcher the unit needs gauge wheels to set the tines off the ground that way they will catch the grass and flex and spring back. If you allow then to drag on the ground they will scratch the surface but will not flex . you want the tines to flick the dead grass up to the surface. Hope this helps.

I bought a pine needle rake last year and it works fabulously. Plus, it rakes up branches after a storm. Frankly, my estate side rake takes the cake on dethatching, though.

I have used my CMP Attachments 3 point dethatcher for several years and absolutely LOVE it! 3 point allows you to control the pressure unlike a tow behind. I use it for preparing seed beds and cleaning up sticks and leaves as well as dethatching. Tractor 3-Point Dethatcher :: CMP Attachments they are offering 5% off coupon code TBN5 until 2/15/2016 and flat rate shipping $4.50

I use a pine needle rake as well. Bought mine from EverthingAttachments.com and am very happy with it.
