I've always driven stick shift cars and trucks, but when it comes to tractors you can't beat HST. Haven't driven one with shuttle shift. Might be a good in-between and still give more power to wheels and PTO. Don't think the 4110 has this though.

My neighbor's old 820 with gears is a pain to change speeds or to change directions on. My 4010 with HST is so easy.

HST is not like an automatic transmission. It's used on ships and military vehicles now. It's basically just a hydraulic pump with a diverter valve (the pedals). Pretty simple. There is some hydraulic loss though.

I bought my JD 4100 gear drive in 2000. I absolutely love it. I have never had a minutes problem with it. When friends see how much power my little tractor has they are amazed. If fact, two guys I know went out a bought one just like mine after I helped them with some yard chores. I have heard that the hydro is easier to operate, but I can't imagine needing anything easier than the gear. It's simple. It comes with a both a foot and hand throttle, so when you need a little more power when doing loader work, you just step on the gas pedal. Pretty simple. I have done about everything with this tractor. It is a great snow plowing machine. I love it when it snows and I can go out and play.
