I've always driven stick shift cars and trucks, but when it comes to tractors you can't beat HST. Haven't driven one with shuttle shift. Might be a good in-between and still give more power to wheels and PTO. Don't think the 4110 has this though.
My neighbor's old 820 with gears is a pain to change speeds or to change directions on. My 4010 with HST is so easy.
HST is not like an automatic transmission. It's used on ships and military vehicles now. It's basically just a hydraulic pump with a diverter valve (the pedals). Pretty simple. There is some hydraulic loss though.
