Buying Advice Looking at buying case 580CK diesel with shuttle shift transmission has been sitting

Hi.
I'm looking at a diesel 580CK with a shuttle shift transmission that has been sitting for years and doesn't run.
The guy says its from the 60s or 70s.
I'm not familiar with the shuttle shift transmission.
Are they durable like a manual, or do they use hydraulics like the hydrostatic transmissions?

Also, is there anything about this particular model that may pose a problem getting it back in working condition?
Are parts available?

It depends on the tractor.
Some have a dry clutch and the shuttle chooses foward/reverse, others have wet clutch packs and they don't need you to use the foot clutch to shift directions.

Per tractordata, that tractor was available with either a synchronized shuttle with 8 forward and reverse gears and a dry disc clutch, or with a power shuttle that has 4 forward and reverse gears and a power shuttle with torque converter.

So, is it a 4 speed, or a 8 speed?

Yep, Aaron described the difference.

My nephew has the dry clutch version. He doesn't like it for FEL work. It's fine for backhoe work.

I'd say the dry clutch version is least likely to have issues. And if it does, it'll be the dry clutch needing replaced. That requires the tractor be broken in half but parts will be relatively cheap.

The Torque Convertor version is more likely to have something wrong after sitting that long. It also requires tractor be broken in half to repair and parts could be very pricey.
