WOW! $16 grand for the backhoe new. That simply looks like too much backhoe (and $) for a CUT. Sort of like the tail wagin' the dog.

There is a big difference between a backhoe's rated SIZE and its maximum REACH. The "12-foot" backhoe described above is probably more like a 9 foot model by industry sizing standards.

A backhoe's rated size is the maximum depth below grade that it will dig a flat spot 2' long. It's reach is the max distance from the pivot center to the ends of the bucket teeth. The attached Bradco Page lists 9', 11' and 13' sizes - their reach is approximately 3 feet more.

For example, Kubota's BH90 specs show...
Digging Depth - 108.9" (≈9')
Reach for Centerline of Swing Pivot - 146.5" (≈12')

FWIW even the BH75A has a "reach" of just over 10'.
