Backhoe Long Backhoe Boom Leaks

I don't know if this is the proper place for it or not, but here goes. I have a Long 5 n 1 with FEL and Backhoe. There are about 3 hydraulic lines that run up INSIDE the boom on the backhoe and one (or more) of them is leaking pretty good. Can't see up inside the boom to tell which one it is, let alone how to remove it!! Any suggestions or input before I have to call the mechanic??

First, it seems odd that one of the hoses would develop a leak up inside the boom where they're protected. Double check the ends and fittings which are exposed high up on the boom. Maybe you've got a leak there and the fluid is running down along the hose.

Now let's assume there actually is a leak inside the boom. I don't know the actual configuration of you backhoe, but I am guessing that two of the hoses go to opposite ends of the hydraulic cylinder (jack) that causes the bucket to pivot. The other hose goes to the high end of the jack that moves the dipper.

To determine which hose, use the joystick (with the machine running) to

1. Curl the bucket tight and hold the joystick in that position (yes, the relief valve will be squealing) for several seconds. Then check for fresh fluid leaking out of the boom.
2. Uncurl the bucket tight and hold that position under pressure for several seconds, then check for fresh fluid.
3. Move the dipper up and away from you to its extreme position. Hold the joystick in the position for several seconds and then check for fresh fluid.

Then just disconnect the faulty hose at both ends and pull it out of the boom. Take it to NAPA or a local hydraulic shop and have them make up a new one. Or go to the dealer and have them get you a new one.


You could also just disconnect all three hoses and pull them all out. You may have to do this if they've tied the hoses together with a nylon wire-tie where you can't get at it.
