Long 560 DT

I just bought a long 560dt. Im trying to figure out how to use the pto clutch lever. Do you lift the pto clutch handle then engage the pto lever? Do I need to lower the rpms before engaging the pto? Or does my pto clutch just not work? When I lift the pto clutch lever with rpms elevated then try engage the pto lever it just grinds and won’t engage.

Lifting the lever should disengage the PTO clutch disc (same as depressing travel clutch pedal) so the clutch disc stops turning and you can shift the PTO lever into gear. In your case it's probably stuck to one or the other of the pressure plates. What you might try. Put the transmission in low gear, lock the brakes. Put the PTO in gear. Raise and lock the PTO clutch lever. Put a pipe wrench and a cheater pipe on the PTO output shaft and see if you can break it loose. You might get lucky.

Thank you for your response. I’m trying to understand what you mean by locking the pto lever. When I lift the pto lever it doesn’t seem to do anything. From what I’ve seen on this tractor there is a spring loaded mechanism in the lever that is most likely stopped up with crud. Maybe if I clean it up it’ll work properly?

Typically that style PTO clutch lever has a latch mechanism (similar to a brake pedal lock) where you can lock the lever in the up position. Maybe that one doesn't. If not you can always tie it in the full up position for the process.

This is what the lever looks like on my tractor. I assume the spring loaded mechanism is supposed to automatically lock it in the up position but I’m not sure.
