Long 460 making trans noise

I just bought a 1987 Long 460 and in low range any gear it's got a pretty good whine/growl to it. Never heard another tractor be this loud. According to the service manual it has a planetary gear reduction with straight cut gears. I know straight cut gears are loud but this almost sounds like a bearing going bad. Anybody know if these tractors are just loud in low range by nature??

I checked the fluid and it's about halfway up the dipstick. According to the service manual it says it should be at the upper mark, there is no upper mark that I can see, it only has one mark on the dipstick pretty close to the end of it.

Anybody know about this??

Which transmission is in the tractor, 6 or 8 speed?

the 460 has an eight speed but the trans should not be that loud does it onl make noise in low range are in both high and low

My 2360 had loud final drives but I seem to remember it being louder in higher gears not lower.

Never to late for a post. The 2000 series Longs always seem to be a little noises in the final outboards. Some worst than others. We have a Allis 5040 ( long 360) that has been clunking since purchased brand new in 1975. Allis ran power fluid 821 ( 10w 20 wt.) We put in 80w90 to quiet them down alot. The fluids are seperate from from the tranny, hyd., and diff. oil. Long used 80w-90 in all their outboard axles. trac
