Take a look at the Super Split log splitters. My father bought one of these over 20 years ago. He used it one summer to split 50 cords of wood ( brought in on trucks). You can get an electric or a gas powered version. They are fast, simple, reliable, and easy to use. You could probably even rig one up to run off the tractor with a hydraulic motor. In the 20 or so years that he has had this splitter I think the only problem he had was a bad switch or something like that.

Hi...

That Super Split looks really good...

How well does it handle full round logs ? (video shows splitting pre-split logs)

What happens if it the log can't be split in the 1st try ? Does the unit jamb ?
Called the company... the flywheel stops... flip a lever & the unit returns to the starting position...

Splitter prices shown at web site have increased about $170...

I guess it would depend on how big a log you put on it but as I remember it would take care of any log I could get up onto it. Sometimes it would take a couple of tries but it would always split them. Occasionally I would get jams - mostly if I was trying to split the crotch of a tree or a weirdly shaped log. Found I could always get it loose by wacking the driver or the log enough to get them to separate.

These guys seem to have some pretty nice products, but I haven't been able to convince myself to part with the 1800 for the TW3: http://www.timberwolfcorp.com/splitters/product_line.htm

Maybe after another day or 2 of splitting by hand. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have a good one,
Dave

Thanks for the very informative reply.
It appears to me that just the rail, cyl,w/wedge and perhaps valve is all I need (maybe best found on an old tow splitter with worn out engine) will begin the search locally today.
The hoses and couplings are readily available to me and with all of the hyd. fittings (ports) that are available on my tractor this seems to be an easy project and considerably cheaper than $1800 or so for a good 3 point splitter
4 cords is about what I burn every year so not exactly needing high volume production and can do that in a weeks time so really don't want to piddle around with another engine to baby sit!
Will keep you updated on this project.
