what do you think of this for locking up a tractor in a remote location.[besides pulling fuse, keeping out of site ect.]i was thinking fabricating a 1.5" dia. 80" long bar that ran through the rear tractor rims.one end would be capped with a 1/2" thick round disk, the other end woudl have a cup that fits onto the end with a super, heavy duty[baseball type] padlock.the cup would stop anyone from cutting the lock.what do you think??would this rod stop the tractor if it was started and driven??they make this special chain that has a hexagon link.any body have any experiance with this stuff??

BWS,

Don't know about the hexagonal chain. Looks like good stuff. If you use the right bar, let me know. My DeWalt 18V recip saw will be right along. 1.5" will take me a few minutes, and a battery but I'll have a nice tractor when I'm done. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif This route might work, and I think it would stop the tractor, or at least do considerable damage when somone attempted to drive it, but you would have to use a good steel. Hardened and chromed maybe.

I forgot to say "just joking". Now the FBI is probably headed my way already. I seem to remember some legal problems with hurting someone stealing from you.

BWS, first get a good insurance policy on the tractor and the implements. Then use the tractors safety features to your advantage. Most tractors wont start with the PTO's engaged so go ahead and engage the rear PTO and the mid PTO if you have one. Then make sure it is in gear because most wont start in gear. You could also shut the fuel off and that way if they did get it started they wouldn't get very far. If you are real paranoid about it I would suggest you put a hidden kill switch in the system somewhere.

Take home a tire & rim.
Take home the steering wheel.
A big a-- chain from the rear axle to around the tractor frame with a big a-- lock holding it togeher and it tight enought they can't burn it off and it's so big a hacksaw won't work.
Or a trailer and and haul the tractor to store nearby..Heck givin' farmer Brown $50 a month to park your tractor at his place is a pretty cheap deterent.

I hope I live to see the day that our society Has had enough of the thief, rapist, child molester and dope pushers and starts a one time chance or the fertilizer pile. They say that isn't a deterrant, I say when they are thinned out the problem will take care of itself.

To help Thwart MDNick's plan you'll need a bar and a pipe.
Put your bar inside the pipe. When he tries to cut it the bar inside the pipe will spin. Makes it real hard to cut.

Given enough time and verasity you'll get through anything but that should slowem down a lot.

Now darn it CTyler. Shushhh./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You are absolutely right. Every little thing that you can do to slow them down, adds up to a bunch of pain in the necks. And enough pain in the necks and hopefully they'll leave.
