We have decided to lock down our stables and horses due to the EHM outbreak that started not far from us in Waco, Texas. Texas Department of Agriculture issued an alert on Wednesday with only 2 cases identified. It is expanding rapidly with cases in 7 states as of today. No visitors allowed on our property and horses not going anywhere. Fortunately, we just had the farrier in to get everyone shod and the vet came 2 weeks ago to give fall vaccinations, so no one should need to come in for at least 6 weeks. Plenty of hay and feed for a while. Horses on either side of us don't go anywhere and they are far away from ours.

Same here. No horses coming or going for a while. Boarders have been notified to come clean on the property if they have visited other farms.

Good luck.

Looks like some cases coming out of another arena according to the news. On the Monday 11/10/25, the day after the WPRA event, and Monday 11/17/25 there were large jackpot barrel events, plus some roping events, at an arena in Stephenville, near the WPRA event. Sounds reasonable, as horses wouldn't have to travel far from Waco to attend. Local vet services have posted they have confirmed cases from both locations as well.

For those of you having outbreaks, good luck.

EHMhas broken out around here a couple of times, over the years, and for me (and the horses) the lack of anything other than supportive care is anxiety inducing at best, at least for me.

All the best, Peter

We have a horse in training in East Texas and have requested the same from our horse trainer. They have closed their facility and are quarantined for the next 45 days. I would recommend the same for anyone in North America to do the same. We have quarantined our farm in KY, and have cancelled any activity that would have taken us or our horses around any other equine facilities. The horse community needs to shut down for the next 45 to 60 days to get this under control. The damage to our industry can be catastrophic. If this gets to a pandemic situation, the impact could be billions of dollars lost to racing/breeding/showing/rodeo events. If you have horses, pay attention to this. It will not just go away.

It will get worse before it gets better. So far, no East Texas cases have been reported. There are 34 cases in the EDCC database in 8 states. The EDCC numbers only show cases that have been lab tested and are positive. The number of non-tested symptomatic or that were put down without testing is unknown. Some suggest that number is twice the EDCC case report.

I don't think it's where I'm at, yet anyways, but it makes me grateful to have room and access where we can ride/train without any other people or animals around. Not counting the wild animals. Figure to error on the side of caution though... Good luck to all the horse owners and always be safe.
