It'd be quite the powerful little iPhone, iPad or GPS device that could transmit to an orbiting satellite.

I was trying to figure out why I have to tell my GPS where I live. They seem to do fine without that info.

This is all about information gathering. Your Iphone and PC etc are reporting on you as per your permissions. When the Google car rolls by they also logged wi-fi data traces.
If you think your network is hidden, think again. It may even be in the armature war driving database maps.

It really doesn't know where you (or anyone else) lives...it only knows where "it" is at...but if you designate a location as "home" it (the mapping software) can relate that information...

no harm no foul...

but you may not believe how many folks think that their GPS navigation devices actually have 2-way communications with GPS satellites...

FWIW...
on a side note...anyone with a laptop or handheld pocket PC etc...can buy a GPS reciever for about $25 and use it the same as stand alone navigation device...all else that is required is some mapping software...

...if the laptop or handheld has bluetooth it is even better
