Ok need some help I have a mf 1240 with loader 4wd, my question is there a way to hook onto the loader control valve and use the curl and dump sides of the control valve to run a sickle mower with a lift cylinder and if so what parts are needed to make it work, thanks

Is there a SA cyl on the sickle bar mower. Power up gravity down.

Yes, you can use the lift circuit and plug the A port.

You only need a SA valve or a DA valve converted to SA.

Have yet to get a cylinder for mower just trying to figure it all out before I start just buying parts what I was wanting to do was control bar up and down as I have a balanced head ih 1300 mower mainly used around pond and ditches what would I need to get to make that work?

If you use a DA cyl for power up and down, you can use the lift or curl circuits for the up/down on the sickle bar mower.

Just use QD's on the loader valve and plug the sickle bar mower hose into the QD's.

I did use the curl(bucket) circuit on a Kubota M4900 that I did own to operate a SA cylinder on both my hay cutter and rake with no problems. Nothing special just disconnect both bucket hoses and attach one implement hose to QD and go.

Jim, what did you do with the other work port if you only used one hose or if you used two hoses, what did you do with the second hose when using the SA cyl?

Nothing. I've seen your comments about routing the other side of the spool to sump but I just left the QD not used with nothing attached and on both implements the SA cylinders operated correctly. IIRC the FEL bucket cylinders would extend with no bucket but it didn't affect the operation of the SA cyl.

So by looking at this where do I add qd's to thanks for info

Does your SA cyl have one hose port and a breather port, or is that cyl a DA cyl with a breather adapter in the rod end.

Can you show picture of your SA cyl.

Most SA cyl pressurize the base port to extend the cyl rod and use gravity down.

Is your sickle bar mower powered up or down?

this is what im looking to do found pic on red power website, if i have one going to curl and one to dump this should work right?

Those are DA cyl and a loader valve will work, just don't use the float or the regen.

Actually, you could use float if you wanted the sickle bar to follow the contour of the ground.

Any two spool valve will operate those cyl.

All sickle mowers I've ever seen with a hyd cyl were only powered up. IIRC JD sickle mower linkage allowed cutter bar to float up therefore couldn't be powered up.

I have a question on hyd cylinder with one hose & a breather port on opposite end of barrel that you state is double acting although it's utilized as single acting. That's similar to the type hyd cylinder my Vermeer 7030 disc mower has. How can a true single acting cylinder with no breather not create a vacuum on opposite side of piston from the oil?
Thanks,Jim

Jim,

That SA cyl has a port somewhere, or it would pull a vacuum. It might be on the gland nut. If you put your ear close to the cyl as you retract it, you should hear air or if you put soapy water all over the cyl, you might see bubbles.

Those cyl posted above with two hoses each are SA cyl or someone has added a hose to the vent port.

You should be able to tell by looking at the valve, If he is controlling a SA cyl using a DA valve, one of the work ports would be plugged, or the other hose is gong to tank.

A true SA valve only has one work port.

Excerpt:

Somewhere at the top of the tube there might be a hole that lets air in and out of the pipe depending on the piston movement.

Jim,

I've seen/repaired SA cylinders on combine/SP windrowers that have "no breathers" but also have no piston as the cyl rod is actually utilized as the piston.

Excerpt:

■ SINGLE-ACTING CYLINDER
The single-acting
cylinder is pressurized
at one end only, with the
opposite end vented to
atmosphere through a
breather filter (air cylinder)
or vented to a reservoir
(hydraulic cylinder).
The return stroke of the
cylinder is accomplished
by some external means

What you are talking about is a ram.

There is no air space.

No air vent is needed since oil fills the whole inner chamber of the cylinder housing. Once again spring action or gravity is necessary for retraction

SA piston seals might also be different.
