Living with a horse

With the snow melting we got really wet and Bart - my daughters horse - would bring the mud under the barn and clearly the mud was gaining ground. I was concerned about his hoofs and also I like things clean and organized and it is hard to push horse around, I had to match the area to the horse, it was always working fine with just sheep, but horse - as I am learning - has special needs. OK, so I dug it out:

Now I used treated lumber from other projects and scraps from old fence to create a wooden step to divide the "dry" area and the mud out in the open:

The last step was to spread a cubic yard of blue stone dust, it could use little bit more, but the quary is open only in the morning on Saturday and it will have to wait.

And the result, one happy horse; I tried to get a closer picture but he does not like to be cought in the dog position and always gets up as soon as somebody comes along.

We have about two acers to feed him on - but winter is barn and hay.

Thats what is used in our neck of the woods for sacrificed area - where the horses turn grass in mad in winter, the solution is to dig it out, put drains down and fill it up with stone dust.
