Live PTO

I have a early 90s Taishan TS-254 tractor. Can anyone tell me if it has live pto? The manual said it has a single disk clutch, so does that mean no live pto?

That wording is a little ambiguous.
It looks like the 2-stage clutch is an option on that model and the manual may not reflect that option. TS tractor - Detailed info for TS tractor,TS tractor,TS tractor,TS254 on Alibaba.com

With a 2-stage clutch the engine disengages when the clutch is half way down and there is a little more resistance as you push the clutch in the rest of the way to disengage the PTO.

The easy way to tell is with a PTO implement attached. If you push the clutch all the way in, put the tractor in gear and engage the PTO, then slowly release the clutch the implement should start turning before the tractor starts to move. With a single stage clutch the tractor movement will coincide with the PTO starting.

If it does have a single stage clutch, get an overrunning clutch for the PTO. It slips over the shaft and prevents the momentum of the implement from propelling you forward when you want to stop.

If you have to use the clutch to engage or disengage the PTO then it's considered live.
If you can engage it with a button or switch it is independant.
The advantage to an independant PTO is you can engage or disengage it on the fly.
I own both and don't consider one any better than the other, although the live setup seems less prone to failure.
