Given the high cost of these machines, why is it all the people who've bought them and post film on youtube don't seem to have any grass to bale? the swath they are baling looks more like the tailing from a domestic walk behind mower. They travel about 100 yards then the baler plops out this little 25lb bundle. Why bother? Why spend the money on a baler?

You can pick up an old style buckrake for about £50 . Another £200 to repair, shotblast, repaint and you're away. On these backyard farms you aren't worrying about haulage distances, just drive to the far end of the windrow, rake back and into the barn. You can easily get in 2-3 acres in an hour, probably less time than it takes trying to get the mini baler out, hitched up and working properly.

I'm in central Indiana. You can generally get a small (7 foot) haybine (sickle bar with conditioner rollers) in usable shape for $1200 to $2000, a five bar rake for $700 to $1000, a square baler for $800 to $1500.

That gets you started as long as you have a 40 hp tractor with live power.

We have plenty of grass through early summer. The problem is having enough drying time to get it cured so it will keep. I can usually get another cutting worth the time in September too.
