My M 8540 (Kubota) has a limited slip front end. My dealer sells an after market GL5 80/90 brand @ $65 for 5 gal. It states an application for limited slip differentials. Auto Zone has 5 gal of GL5 for around $50. Am I to assume that all current GL5's are okay for the limited slip, or do certain brands add a component for the LS application to the GL5 stock? thanks bb

I don't know if this applies for tractors, but I know for Chrysler products, you could buy a little bottle of "friction modifier" to add to the regular rear end grease to make it work for limited slips.

That is the same for Ford products. Good, regular oil with friction modifier.

Usually it is 4 oz. per 3 pints of oil.

No, not all GL-5 gear oils include the limited slip additives. If they do it will state on the container that it is safe for use in limited slip differentials without the addition of any additional additives.

Not all take the additive, have 2005 Ram 3500 with gear type limited slip and it does not take it but 2006 Jeep Commander with clutch packs needs GL5+friction modifier front and rear.

Those additives differ a lot too. I've had chatter problems on my F350 rear limited slip using some of the oils with the additive already in (Mobil 1) or adding generic stuff to regular diff oil. Whenever I actually went and got the Ford OEM stuff it worked great and really costs very little, if any, more.

Thanks for the heads up on this. Picked up a tube of Trans-x, I'll add to the center axle. Actually Kubota central was very unclear on this, they recommended strictly UDT for the gear oil. I'll stick w/GL5 & the additive. It may;well be that with the tractor the RPM is so low that it may be an overkill on my part, but with the 8540 just being paid off, am trying to keep the bases covered. bb
