I have permanet dock with wooden piers. Am getting too old to manually lift small jon boats (12' and 10') onto dock. Any ideas for a home made lift or some kind of ramp with rollers with a winch?

Thanks

Thank you. By golly I think you are right. I'm going to order tomorrow. By the way what does "ram travel = 5" mean?

Probably how much the ram actually comes out of the bottom part. 5 inches of ram showing

Ernie,

The crane listed at Harbor Freight will lift a small boat, but may not be the slickest way. The hydraulic bottle jack (which has a 5" stroke) lifts the boom arm (which also telescopes manually) from horizontal to about 60 degrees or so.

If you are on salt water, you have to use a galvanized unit or it will be trashed in a few short years.

Even on fresh water, plan on giving it a real paint job before even installing it, since the orange Chinese stuff does not qualify as "paint" in any sense of the word.

I would suggest checking with boat and marine suppliers that sell various small cranes known as Davits that are intended for your purpose in galvanized and powder coated versions. Many are designed to mount directly to a dock pier so would also be easier to mount than the Harbor Freight model.

Good Luck,

Rip

That crane is on sale for $99.00 at my local Harbor Freight store. It is a new store but I don't see anything on the flyer that limits it to this store. May be regional though, check it out if you have a store close.

Another suggestion build a simple ramp from the dock to the water and use a winch, either a manual or power winch (like the ones on ATVs, trucks, boat trailers).

Rollers and winch.

Easier if the dock was floating (don't know how high off the water you are).

Yes a set of bunks, with or without rollers and a winch would do it also. Maybe he could salvage a small boat trailer and rig it as a ramp. I'd think he'd want to make it retractable, so folks zipping by the dock didn't run into it though.
