Leonz:
Question about belts.
Numerous times you refer to green kevlar belts in this thread. Are you referring to single ribbed kevlar v-belts, or banded (2 ribs) v-belts?
I cannot find Kevlar v-belts in a banded b54/55 size anywhere.
Anyone have a source???
Is it OK to use two separate kevlar v-belts on a Ford 917 flail mower?

Thanks!

This is what I ordered for my 917 and it worked great. I've since sold the mower, but I used it heavily when I had it and the belt held up just fine.

When my Dad burned the Belt off the 917, I cheaped out and replaced it with two singles. AS I RECALL (and that was a long time ago) the individual belts did not last long, even with proper operation. The Double was the one to get. Fortunately, we had a Goodyear Warehouse and Manufacturing facility that I provided Security for and I got a great deal. That is sadly all gone these days replaced by tourism!

Thank you, Dave!:)

Yeah I also ordered new cutters for the Ford 918H today, thought it best to get them while the gettin was good. She gave me a HECK of a price and a month or so ago JD helped me out on bearing housings for the roller. Really great folks to deal with, sad to see them go.

Newest member of the flail nation. Caroni TM1900 bought used. Previous owner swapped out OEM knives for stamped duck foot blades. Don't know if I'll change back, but I'll kill these before I do anyway

Hello and good morning Michael in Tennessee,

I wish to welcome you as the newest resident member of the "Flail Mower Nations" from the Great State of Tennessee.

I see you have some of that fuzzy white mold on your lawn that occurs in the winter months eh? We have a lot of that stuff up north and it is usually gone by late april most years.

If you have a lot of brush to knock down you can do it pretty well now as all the brush has been winter killed and does not have a lot of moisture in it.

Happy Mowing,

Ya think I got the right attachment for the season? :)

It'll warm up again a few times prior to winter really setting in.

Obviously, I'm not gonna get this thing set-up in the next few days. Tomorrow will be colder than today, but late in the week we will back to high 50's, low 60's.

Without me reading a couple hundred pages, what is my best source for knives and other replacement parts? I'm re-reading the thread, but, of course, it will take a while. So far, I know the knives look good and the roller and scraper are still round and spin good. Fresh grease on the zerks.

Hello Michael,

The best place would be agrisupply for spare parts and knives.

Hello sjssmith8688,

You could try the Gates catalog for a 2 ribbed V belt but I am not sure if you want to stomach the price.

AS LONG AS both V belts have the same exact lot number they will be fine. if your belt dealer tries to sell you two belts that are not the same lot number walk away and find another V belt dealer

Do Y blade use less power than the airplane wings??

I don't htink so.

the hammers have more rotating mass and chop stuff up much smaller than Y blades.

What I find makes the biggest difference is wet vs dry grass. Wet really takes teh HP, and tall wet or thick grass...you gotta go real slow.

I run a 78" woodmaxx from a 30hp pto ck3510HST kioti.

Anecdotal "evidence" suggests otherwise.

Physics is physics. If you're doing more Work (more chopping) it requires more Power. That's where the unit Horsepower came from.

More rotating mass in teh hammers than Y blades - so it takes more power to get them up to speed, and when they encounter an obstacle they're larger mass is more momentum (like a larger flywheel) helps them keep going - BUT - when they do slow from say, taller/thicker grass, it will take mower power ot get them back up to speed than the lighter mass of the Y blades.

Also, one might want to do the math - the cutting face of 28 hammers is how many inches? vs the Y blades. Does the angle at which it meets the grass make a difference?

Anecdotal "evidence" suggests otherwise.

Here's the new to me Ford flail mower that I just picked up yesterday. I bought it from a local used equipment dealer who did a great job painting it, the wrong color!

I set it up on the 3930 today and took it out for a test drive. I really like how it chops everything up so fine. Cuts real short though. Am I spose to be running this thing right down on the side skids and back roller? On uneven ground it's chopping in the dirt.

That would be the Ford 907. Uses the same blades as the 917, but different hangers.

Your roller is set to it's lowest setting. Good for soccer fields, bad for anything not flat. Set it to a higher setting and try it again. The skids are there as a means of protection to prevent bottoming out, not for riding on. The roller should be carrying it.

907 you say? Thanks! The tag is not very readable. So I'll look to drop the roller, and I guess adjust the top link to get the side skids up and out of the dirt.

Thanks!

The tag doesn't give you the "907". It tells you their code for the model and size. So "22-124" tells me that it's a 907 6 foot. They were made between 1964-1972. Messicks has a parts diagram for the unit and some parts are available through them. Just search 22-124 in New Holland Agriculture on the left side of their home page.

The bolts circled in this picture are the roller adjustment.

The roller is currently set at the lowest setting. Move it one notch and check the result. If it's not satisfactory move it to the last notch (only 3 options).
