The way I understand ... when you put your foot on the pedal and push down the pedal should move about an inch to an inch and a half then some resistance ... then continue to the bottom or the floor. Shift into gear and then as you release the pedal maybe what ... moves about 3" before the tractor starts to move?

That first inch and a half is the fork moving the throwout bearing onto the clutch fingers. That's the "free play" and that's specific dimension is usually given in the owners manual and you make linkage adjustments to get to that.

As you start to release the clutch pedal the clutch engages the pressure plate and the flywheel and will slip until the torque resistance of the clutch matches the torque output of the engine and then the power begins to be transmitted from the engine to the drive line. The number of inches from "foot to the floor" to vehicle motion depends on the load (torque required to move the vehicle) and the condition of the clutch. In general, the longer the distance, the more worn the clutch.
