Today on Facebook Marketplace, I found this Duff Barrett 15 Ton Railroad Jack with original handle. The gentleman actually drove to meet halfway and sold it to me for $75. I was very pleased. Boy, is this puppy a heavy piece of American iron!

Man I could really use that right now, getting ready to move my machine shop and would much rather use that the. The old pry-and-block method to get the machines on the skates.

Missed a deal at work today...

One of the gals was cleaning out her parents home and brought some items to work...

One item, a wedding present in 1973... 12 pc Revere Ware stainless pots and pans new still in the box... never opened and made in USA.

I saw it and know money is tight for her folks and said I will give you $100 for it... Mom just loves her Revere Ware and it is identical to her set and made in USA...

She said are you serious... I said yes and pulled out my wallet... she said I just gave it away to one of the new RN moving into her first apartment...

So goes it.

On the way home I found laying in the middle of the road a 3-way trailer ball set... looks great... almost no wear to be seen... just laying in the road... so I am up for the day.

One of the first things I bought when we got married was Revere Ware pots and pans set back in 1985. I don't know how many non-stick pans we've had and tossed, yet the Revere Ware looks good as new. I was impressed with them when I was a kid and my mom had them, so that's why I got them. Once in a while, at a Goodwill store, or 2nd hand shop, I'll see one of the older Revere Ware pots or pans and snatch them up. You can tell the older ones by the feel. They're thicker than the newer ones. Good stuff.

I was a little bummed because the old stuff is better made... it is the weight and composition of the stainless which was cheapened starting around 1970...

Apparently the good stuff has a deep embossed patent stamp on the bottom but the new stuff doesn't...

I love quality stuff. But sometimes think of the waste of making everything heavier than it needs to be. I struggle with this. What is right?

Over time quality wins but many have no idea of what quality is...

I have seen furniture built to last put on the curb for new IKEA stuff.

Actually had a co-worker redo her entire home in IKEA and she was so excited until I said IKEA is very popular with students and those just starting out in Austria because they have trendy inexpensive items... she was not happy and I have nothing against IKEA

From what I've read, there was a change in the thickness in the copper and stainless steel thicknesses in 1968 to thinner, yet they were still good quality. There was another change around 1986-87 and that's when they started being considered not so good anymore. I think I have a large and small frying pan, several large pots, a double boiler, a steamer, and half a dozen sauce pans of varying sizes, and a lid for each, plus a few extra lids. I see the lids for 50 cents and I buy them for some reason.
