Let my neighbor borrow my tractor...

The "neighbor" across the road owns 3 or 4 ? rental properties who knows thats his business . And I could give a rats butt . Throughout the years here and there would ask to borrow high dollar tools / wrenches etc (big stuff) . So one day he gets a brilliant idea to ask me if I would lend him one of my tractors and bh / phd etc . So I about had enough of his borrowing routine and suggested to him " Hey why dont you sell one of your properties and buy a tractor , some tools and equipment" ? I swear I told him exact words . He tells me " I cant do that those bring me in income ". So I told him how I too could have a rental propertie givin me "income" , but decided I dont like to borrow peoples things for my longtime benefit . Nowadays from afar we wave at each other as a courtiesey when see each other from afar . I couldnt be happier . And down deep inside I"am a man that likes too help true people in need but that was enough of his BS .

I hear you! Let him go rent them when he needs them with some of that money he's making off that rental property, it'd be a write off for him anyway if he tags the use for his business properties

This is the only way that works out for me. My stuff is old and I do just fine with it but when it starts chattering at me I know what it wants. :)

Oooooooooooo! Racy stuff:cool2:

There are no victims, only volunteers. You let people borrow your stuff, don't whine about it. There is a word called NO. Don't make excuses or beat around the bush, just NO! You can't.

Maybe a bit more diplomatically:

I don't loan my equipment out, but if I have time, I will try to come over and do it for you.
You may never "have time".

I lent my tractor to my neighbour last weekend and it didn't come back until the middle of the week. Fuel tank had been topped off and the bucket was full of firewood. And it hadn't been able to do what he borrowed it for. That was a win for me anyway but I'll probably have to go over and give him a hand to get his problem sorted.

I never loan out my tractor, but, will gladly help a neighbor with mowing, chipping, etc. free of charge. I live in an area where the properties range from a couple acres to over a hundred. Most of the people who have moved into the area over the last 15-20 years are foreign born and have little to no idea how to live in the “country”, let alone how to use heavy equipment. One neighbor asked to borrow my XR4150 to level the ground right behind his house which had a very steep several hundred foot drop off. With no tractor experience, I figured he would have killed himself and destroyed my tractor in a matter of minutes. I told him it was really work for a skid steer, and don’t rent one, but, hire a professional since it was a dangerous job he wanted done. Fortunately he took my advice.
Another neighbor had a couple of eucalyptus trees come down in a storm, completely blocking the road to his barn. He was out there with a cheap electric chain saw trying to clear it. I came over with my Stihl polesaw and cleared 40’ of roadway in short order. Then I went home and returned with my tractor and Woodmax chipper and chipped the huge pile of branches for them.
I would rather take the time and effort to be the “awesome” neighbor and build goodwill, than let anyone potentially damage my tools and equipment.
