Look at the mower gearbox input shaft. Now.. look at the very end of the shaft.. the one farthest away fromt he gear box.. the pto shaft yoke slides over this shaft and is then held on with a shear pin or bolt. Now.. that end of the shaft may have a groove machined around the circumference near the end.. or a drilled hole on the cross section of the input shaft, or on the shaft surface, depending on what keeper method was employed.
I have also seen shafts that the pin was the keeper, and then there was a moon or woodruff key that actually held the yoke to the shaft.. etc..
