Cub Cadet Yanmar EX 3200
What should the price difference be ? Compact tractor with loader that goes for about $17,000 for the 2011 version. There is no noticable difference in the same model over the 3 years. I can buy a leftover, only 1 or 2 hours on the meter, with new tractor warrantee, and save money. How much more should I pay for a leftover 2010 versus a leftover 2009 ? ( same dealer )

The logic is this. The older tractors were purchased at lower price point. The newer tractors have had multiple price increases applied. These are often as much as $300 here and $200 there, so over a couple years, it can add up.

Don't make offers you wouldn't really go through with in making a deal, but if you like the year old or two year tractor, push harder on the price. Really hard and see what happens. If the dealer wants to move them out, he knows he's got to take a little less profit on it to get it gone.

Thanks bp fick - but I'm looking more for a number than negotiating advice. If the 2010 leftover was $15,000, how much less would you expect to pay for the 2009 leftover ? If the 2009 was $15,000, how much more would you spend for the 2010 ?

I seriously doubt there is a definitive answer.

I know when I was looking for mine last year, one dealer said he found one (he model I wanted) that was a couple of years old and only had 2 hrs on it, still new. But he was only offering a savings of $200, and that was $700 higher than another dealer wanted for one on his lot. So I'm thinking there are so many variables to this that both bp and triple r are correct. But that's just based on my one experience at buying a tractor.

how NH does it, after an invoice reaches a certain date, for example right now if a compact tractor was invoiced to the delaer prior to 4/1/2010 then that tractor gets an extra disocunt. usually anywhere from 2% up to 5 or 6% percent depending on what tractor it is or what have you. if a tractor is say a 2009 model and is reaching two years old or older, which for NH there isnt a whole lot of those out there if any depending on what size you are looking for then they will usually work a pretty good deal.

theres no right or wrong answer to your question.just ask the dealer what his bottom $ is on the tractor your wanting an go from there.the longer theyve had a tractor on the lot the more willing they are to move it.

Well then let me re-phrase. I bought the tractor advertised as a 2010 leftover last week. Now after researching the serial number I found out it is actually a 2009. Would you just "eat it" or what would you expect as compensation ? I didn't want to explain that level of detail because I have no intention of making the dealer look bad. I believe he did not know - but I am not willing to provide more detail on that part of it. The dealer seems willing to negotiate but when he asked me what I want I was not sure what an appropriate compenstaion would be. I am just trying to arrive at a fair number - not to put the screws to him.

To be honest with you, I have never felt the need to check the date any of my tractors were manufactured and as long as there was no difference in the features from one year to the next couldn't care less. To me a new tractor is new tractor and I go by the condition ie no faded paint, excess hours etc as tractors are not licensed like cars/trucks.

I doubt most people check to the the build date, but I could be wrong.

I'd say no more that a fair shake on the markup from 09 to 10 (as previously stated). My contention of that from reading here over tha last few years would be $300 - $500. My opinion on the ~$300 - $500 would be to either eat the small delta as a token of a good relationship or haggle out a service cycle i.e an oil / fluid change free of labor charges, etc. A dealer maintenance service can get on upwards of $500 - $600 depending, of which a fair portion is labor and obviously the remainder is parts / materials.

As for straight out cash if he presses the issue, I'd look to $400 as a markup from 09 - 10.

If the issue has become the principle of the matter over sales tactics, I'd figure 3% of which you'll be near the $500 amount.
