Left the key on my 4400.

The key didn't get turned all the way off on my 4400 (3cyl). I got it started but It was really hard. Started missing really bad at @ 1200rpm checked the points and they were smoked. A trip to the dealer, new points and condenser, gap at .025 and now she won't run at all.
What parts get ruined from leaving the key on? The coil was really hot, to hot to touch. Thats next to be replaced tomorrow. I hate just replacing parts but I should've bought one today, the dealer is just over an hr. round trip. If there are more parts that need to be replaced I'll buy them while I'm there. Before this it ran great, a little hard starting but that was it.

I replaced the points, condenser, and the coil. Are there any other parts that would need to be changed from leaving the key on? I'm getting good spark but its back firing like crazy through the carb and the intake at startup.

usually points and coil are all that's needed if they become thermally damaged.

didn't change timing by moving that distribuitor a lil did ya when installing points?

I don't work on 3 cyl gassers much. verify that points gap and timing.

Thx for the help SG. Yes, all the parts came from the dealer. I started thinking I was going crazy and doing something stupid so I put the new points in my 3000, she purrs like a kitten. After the key was left on it back fired through the carb a few times before I could turn it off. I got it going today with the new points but shes running REALLY rough. I'll double check the timing tomorrow. I never rebuild a carb before but I think its gonna happen. Can the carb get screwed up from a backfire?

if it fired thru the carb it can implode the floats.

if that is a holley carb.. get the exact correct kit for that machine, as it will be less than fun anyway, and having the wrong kit makes it worse.

Yep, it a Holley. I replaced the coil thinking it let the oil out after it got hot because it was wet. The coil was still within factory Ohm specs. I was looking at everything again before work. It blew the cap & gasket off the bottom of the carb and the float bowl is leaking gas. Not to bad but a few drips. Smelled the coil, it wasn't oil, its gas. What would you do in a worst case if it needs a total overhaul, buy a new zenith carb for $325 or put the $$$ into the Holley?

ps... i'm not a huge zenith fan.. but will take them over a holley.

ONLY because the holley are SOOOO finicky to rebuild.. I can reuild a marvel carb on my bench with hand cut gaskets and a piece of guitar string and a spray cleaner.. zenith are a lil more tricky due to gasket shape. .. holley i wouldn't even attempt ( but that's me.. )

holley wil be better on fuel.. zenith more gas hoggy... however many a ford tractor has been made into a worker by adding a zenith in place of a holley needing help. beets putting a clothes pin on the choke rod and running them at 25% choke trying to get work out of them...

pps:

for someone skilled in rebuilding a holley.. that's the cheaper route.

if the flaot is leaking and all that happened. i'd be looking to see if they were flatened.. etc..
