Though I should start a new post on this one.
least expensive brand of brush cutter? I can run up to 44" cutter.I'll either rent a walk behind one a couple of times (70/day) or buy a super cheap one. Will only use it once/twice if all goes as planned. thanks, brettw

If you're only going to use it once or twice, I'd try a True Value rental center to see if you can rent a 3PH cutter for a day. I know our local True Value has one or two to rent. Pretty sure they're 60" units though.

Otherwise, King Kutter or Howse are about the cheapest brands I know of...

Brett,When I was seaching for rakes I came across this place. There was a dealer near me in WA, and they are based in GA. Their prices for the rakes was much lower than the KingKutter and the Howse. I bought it and am satisfied with the performance. It's finish is less refined than others, but with what I do with it, finish isn't a big issue. So if you can locate a dealer near you off of their website you may be able to kick the tires on one of the rotary cutters they have, so to speak. I didn't get price on cutters, but I think they would be on the lower end of the price range. J Bar mfg.

I rented a walk behind cutter. Whew. What a PIA. At the VERY least rent a 3ph rotary cutter, you'll be done in no time and on to the next project. At least on my moderately hilly terrain I got as much done with a 6' cutter in ten minutes as it took me four or five hours of maneurvering the behemoth that I walked behind (at $80/day).

I'll second the opinion about a walk behind unit. The tall grass would choke it out & it wouldn't walk into the brush (1" +-) enough to actually cut much. My walk behind sickle mower did a better job. Homier has a 48" unit, I think it was $299, someone on here bought one & I think was satisfied for his use & $ spent.

Have you thought about, buying a used cutter? I bought a used cutter from my dealer for $350, I used it as is, for about two years. After that I spent about $150 reconditioning it, but really didn't have to. If you bought one, cheap enough, you could use it, then sell it and recoup your money.

you will find it is more expensive to find a cutter smaller than 48" and I doubt you will find one that small at a rental place.

I run a 48" Busy Bee or something like that behind the tractor. It's an el-cheapo (about $450) and it works well. I only cut our 8 acre pasture at the house with it about 2/3 times a year so there was no sense investing in a more expensive model. I've also used a walk behind brush cutter for years at the farm to cut around the lake and get to places where the farm tractors can't go. Forget all their advertising rubbish, using one of those is hard work and extremely tiring, especially during the summer heat. You have to walk through all the trash that it cuts and you are continually tripping over the 2" high stumps that it leaves. I have one of the older units with no reverse gear so there is a lot of rugging and tugging associated with it's use. I'll say it again, it's hard work.
One option that may be worth exploring, since you only have to do it a couple of times and hopefully isn't too large, is to hire somebody to come in and cut it for you. Around here the guy that I've used charges $25/hour though some of the members on this board have said that it can go as high as $40/hour. I had him cut our pasture the first couple of times, when it was really bad, and now I just maintain it.

Howse makes a 3' for about 345 at some economy dealers.. and chine imports a halfway decent looking 48" one that it so light looking that if you can power a 44" you can power this one.. 299 or so.

good luck... buy it and use it.. and then sell it?
