Ever since I removed the float bowl to clean the filter, the thing has leaked a bit. Then it drained the tank and my neighbour ran it dry, so off it came again. I tightened it carefully with a channel lock wrench. No go. Last night I carefully assembled the thing and tightened it gently against the O ring. It leaked about a litre overnight.

Bleeding the fuel system after every attempt to fix it makes me reluctant to deal with this. It seems diesel leaks are a bit beyond my level of mechanical competence, but I wonder if there is a cracked part somewhere above the filter bowl.

How do I fix it?

Be sure where the leak is originating ,so that hard to see parts are not cracked that cause it to leak .Try a new o-ring ,with some Vaseline petroleum jelly,or a little grease to allow for movement while getting proper seal.

Do you have a plastic bowl or metal? Take it off and use your thumb nail and check the sealing surface for nicks or cracks. Like the other poster said always use vaseline or silcone grease so the O ring stays flat
