Leak: front drive shaft 855

New to this forum and new to John Deere so go easy on me . I have a 1997 855 4x4 and have everything working good except this leak on the shaft coming out of the trans. I feel that it is just the outer seal but I don’t really know. Any thoughts on what is causing the leak and more importantly is it as simple as pulling the shaft, pulling the seal and inserting a new seal? If so, any tips on removing the drive shaft?

Have not done it myself on this model, but do some searching for the shaft removal. Likely will find some TBN threads that address the issue.
Suspect once the shaft is removed, that installing a new seal will solve the leaking problem as long as the shaft isn't buggered up where the seal cannot seal.

I have no first hand experience here either, but it looks like the whole shifter/shaft package comes off as a unit and comes apart from there. Looks like a replaceable sleeve on the shaft provides the wear surface for the seal should that be needed.

Thanks for the reply’s. I will try to get the seal and get to work. Usually projects like these tend to not go as planned but so far, working on this little tractor hasn’t been too hard.
