Just was given an old LB snowblower. Everything is free moving no binding. Just no spark. Have friend that can help me with the Briggs engine. I just need some help finding what model and year it is? Can't find a single LB plate or stamps anywhere on the machine. Engine is a 5hp Briggs.

There is usually a long number stamped into the flywheel cover. On yours it should be on the side near the carb or maybe the other side.

It's going to be hard to get an exact year on that one. Obviously made when OMC owned Lawn Boy- looking at how it is built, the controls and engine and such it's probably from the late 1970's to early 80's. If the auger and impeller are good and you get it fired up (Try a new condenser on the ignition or look for a sheared flywheel key) it's one to hang on to 'cause you can't buy 'em built like that anymore! Might need a pair of the newer low pressure modern big tread tires or a set of chains to give it some traction though.

Briggs used the same points and condenser set on most of their smaller engines for years and years. I'd pop the flywheel, check for a sheared key, and replace the points and condenser. That is probably all it needs to get spark.

Thanks for all the replies.
Got her up and running. There is a throttle bolt sticking out the top of the engine that i didn't know about. Once I set that to full throttle and sprayed some ether she started up like a champ. Neighbor came over and showed me how to adjust the jet on the carb and now runs with out the choke pulled part way out. He still says the governor needs to be adjusted (sounds like it is running slow to him), but we won't tackle that until we get a warm spell here in IA (above freezing). Still could not find any serial or model numbers.

Well it is snowing another 4 inches today, so I got to go for now.
