What happened to Lawn Boy using 2 cycle engines on their mowers? I have a 2 cycle made in 2003, so I don't know when they dropped them. It looks like they use Briggs and Stranton egines now. I always thought Lawn Boy was known for making great 2 cycle engines, what happened?

I think it was emissions regulations that killed the 2 stroke lawnboy. Also it was probably cheaper to get a off the shelf motor and bolt it on.

IMHO I think the last good lawn boy mower was when the OMC engine was built. I think the last year for this was ~92-94??? When they went to using Tecumseh engines that sunk the brand for Toro and made them just another mower. I am still using a self propelled built in 1978 and it is strong.

Yep, when OMC made the 2 cycle Lawnboy, I don't think they could be beat. I bought a used one in 1971 or 1972 and it was still a fine lawnmower when I gave it away in 1989 because we were going to full time RVing. A good friend used his for at least 25 years that I know of. Their website still listed the 2 cycle option 5 or 6 years ago, so I'm not sure when they quit making them. One of our daughters bought a home that included a year old Lawnboy with a Tecumseh engine in 2000 or 2001. It's not been bad, but certainly not what they used to be. And now Toro owns them, so you can buy a red one with the Toro name or a green one with the Lawnboy name.:D

I have a Toro two stroke that I've had for about 20 years now. It's got a Suzuki engine on it. Finally replaced the spark plug this past month. It's been a great lawnmower.

Steve- I've got the same mower- unfortunately I had a lot of rocks in the lawn due to new construction, so I eventually put in a short block because the bearings took it on the chin, including the rod bearing (of course, rod/crank is one assembly:mad:).... With the new block in it, she's been back up & running the past 4 yrs. Hope to keep it another 20.

That Suzuki "GTS" has been a good runner, starting up every year on the 4th or 5th pull after sitting all winter. Toro blades are too pricey, however- last one was $18.95! Have you ever found a decent replacement?

I'm told that all mowers have dropped 2-strokes due to emissions; don't figure I can afford to switch to a 4-stroke with an oil pump, so I keep the old 2-stroke going. I have too many slopes to go through splash-lubed 4-stroke engines burning up!:D

I found a whole mower for "free" from Pittsburgh Freecycle.org. It's a list where people give stuff away and someone was giving away a Toro with the Suzuki engine on it. And there was nothing wrong with the mower at all. I got it as a spare engine for mine in case it ever fails.

I'm sure the torque of the 4 strokes was a huge advantage, and they couldn't keep running 2 strokes when the competition was running 4 strokes.
Todays people are too stupid and lazy to realize how to run a 2 stroke engine, so thats also a complicating matter. Most have no clue what mixed gas even is, muuchless what needs mixed gas!

Two STROKE engines(all engines are ONE CYCLE but some have 2 strokes to their one cycle and others have 4 strokes to their cycle.....whew) were better cutting on side hills where oil delivery was a problem for 4 stroke engines. I still have a 2-stroke Lawn Boy that is over 20 years old. I think I'll go cut the lawn at the Sierra Club with it ;)
