HELLO TO ALL,
we had the tractor transported back to the farm.
my friend used it for brush hogging for 4, and 1/2
hours. he started back to the barn, and the steering
went south. he called me later, and said the main shaft
had fallen down about 1,1/2in. i said, the snap ring has
come off. i went out there the next morning, with a jack,
and tools. i was able to get the shaft back into alingment,
and everthing else in place. the next big problem, where do we
find a new snap ring, on sunday. we went into fulton,mo.
and started looking. we hit all the autoparts stores, no luck.
one suggested we try westlake hardware. turns out to be an
ACE HARDWARE. this is where i found they had a wide assortment
of snap rings. i bought two, 85 cents each. when i came out of the
store, my frined was on the phone. i waved the little envelope at him,
and smiled. got back to the tractor, and the ring fit perfect. started
up, and back to the barn. i think the big tractor makers had a problem
with design. an 85 cent part shuts down and expensive tractor, this
should not have happened.

Well, I could just as easily have been a $500 part that shut you down. Would that make you feel better? ;) Parts break. In the "old days" more parts were simple, "off-the-shelf" easy to fix stuff. If that same part broke on a new tractor today, it would have been a purpose-built, dealer only item that would have to come from a central warehouse on another planet, shipping would be $15, part $75, and you would have been down for 3 or 4 days. Those $.85 parts are why I LOVE the oldies.
