If you're tilling in a previously dug up garden or riding arena, you should be able to handle a larger tiller no problem. Forward rotation is all you need because you don't want to till a garden until it's powder. I used to have a booklet on getting the most from your Howard rotovator and it mentioned that over tilling is one of the most common mistakes people make. That's why the rear tailgate can be adjusted in different positions.
