B3200, L5740,
Just a question for all L5740 owners. As I have only had mine a week and there are no more on any dealer lots I would like to know if they all act the same at start up when cold. Mine starts great with a puff of black smoke but then goes into a 5 second spell of expelling blue white smoke. Cleans up and runs clean an smooth after that. When it is warm it starts with just the usual black puff.
How about others, are they the same.

Sounds normal for a diesel

Well not quite. The white smoke is not normal for a 70* day but it may be normal for this particular model.

A small short black puff is normal with the L40 series but like kuboman said on
the white smoke. It is not present when we start our L3940 at warm temps.

Sounds like my L5040. I find if I let the pre heat warm it up a few seconds there is much reduced smoke. In the summer the tendency is to turn the key like you would on your car but a short pause to let the pre heat work will help on the smoke. You might check the engine oil level. Mine came from the dealer just a tad too full and after my change at 40 hours I noticed reduced smoke also. I've got 65 hours on it now and there is much less smoke than when it was new. One cool morning I was quite alarmed by the smoke when it had about 5 hours on it but now its a non-issue.

My sounds like yours (was). Mine has 25hrs. I have thought that the preheat is maybe a little short. I always let it heat till the light goes out and then start and it makes very little difference to the smoke as the preheat is so short. I will have to wait for a cold morning to see if it will heat longer. On a 60-70* day it will only preheat for 3-4 seconds.:)

The blue (unburned diesel) smoke is a characteristic of a pre-chamber, indirect injection engine and denotes nothing in the way of a problem.

if there ain't no smoke, there ain't no fire.:D

I have a new L5740 that I just traded in (12/11) a L4740 for this new L5740 and the L4740 never smoked hardly at all, just your normal cold start smoke, but this new L5740 smokes really bad and also skips abit when the temp is cold, I have a block heater that was installed as an option and if I plug it in for awhile it does not hardly smoke at all. I called the dealer about the smoke and they are now telling me that they are all doing it. I don't know why they smoke so bad, but it does not seem right to me. And I also had a L3740 that did not smoke like this either.

There is a video on youtube with the same tractor doing the exact things that yours and mine are doing. I had this same question. starts and runs real crappy coughing and puking smoke for about 3 seconds. Then starts to clear up and run good.

From what I have read this is normal. They have advanced the timing for emissions purposes and this is why it starts like this. I have started at -10 before and it really smokes. In the shop it is 50 and it smokes like all heck.

THis isnt normal of newer diesels. maybe the old powerstrokes or cummins
12 valves, but not the newer motors. My 07 truck never starts like this. My 06 L3130 never started like this. From what I have read and seen on here, this is normal for the turbo'd tractors in the L series. I heard also that the non turbo'd dont do this.

Also, when starting you are supposed to turn the rpm's up to 1500 right away. Seems wierd, but something with the oil pump when cold. Heck when its real cold outside, I cant get it to go to 1500 rpms for at least 10 seconds. It wont clean up even if I go to half throttle.

That is completely normal - the black puff is first couple of inefficient cylinder firings, but the white stuff is the unburnt diesel that collected in the exhaust during the first couple of cranks before it catches.

You'll also probably get a black poof when you rev it up under load.
