Kubota 5030 L series
Hello all, I'm new to this forum and would really appreciate some expert opinions.

I just got done changing the transmission/hydraulic fluid oil at 400hrs in my L5030GST, and noticed afterward when I shift from one gear to the next, would notice a jerky feeling when gear engages, a feeling much like one would get popping the clutch on a manual shift tractor. The oil I used for the change was the "Tractor Supply Premium Trans/Hydraulic Fluid". Could this be the cause of this abrupt shifting, something else, or is this normal as the tractor just gets older?

In the past, gear transition seemed to be much smoother. The TSC label does state that the oil is comparable with Kubota UDT Fluid. All opinions appreciated. Thanks, Bill

I tried TSC Premium hydraulic fluid and didn't like it. Changed it out with New Holland hydraulic fluid (bought from a New Holland/Kubota dealer that said Kubota oil was overpriced).

The hydraulic clutch grabbing and shifting problems went away. The only way you will know for sure is to change it out. The New Holland oil is about $55 for a 5 gallon pail. Not that much more than TS.

I use TSC premium hydraulic oil in my GST L4200, it has worked perfect, nice clean crisp shifts, never any problems.. the only time it dose not shift perfectly is when it is cold, let it warm up the fluid and it is back to normal, great shifts... KennyV

We have Kubota, Case/IH, and Deere products in our operation. I know that only with transmission oil, all 3 dealers recommend using the oil matched to the product when it comes to a powershift, or with the Deere kicker on a baler. They have all said it does not make much of a difference with a gear shift or other hydraulic systems.

When I bought a IH dozer and went to change the trans oil the Case/IH dealer didn't know what the oil was for. He asked me if I was sure that was what I wanted because at the time he thought he knew everything we had and didn't recommend using there oil in a our Deere tractor. The IH tractor ww have is just a gear shift.

gwdixon,

Do you have the glideshift? -- specifically, same problem I was experiencing?

Kenny, My GST shifts fine, it just lunges into gear instead of the smooth transition I have been used to. I could just live with it, but I am concerned that it will not be good for the tractor. Does yours feel like a clutch being let out too fast when engaging a new gear?

On the M7040 it is named "hydraulic syncro shuttle" but it is a hydraulic clutch nonetheless.

I had grabbing when the clutch was feathered with the TS oil. It would suddenly engage. Not good when trying to put a steady pull on a tree being felled.

After the TS oil was changed out with New Holland (10 hours later), things cleared up and were back to normal.

The filters were left alone since they only had 10 hours on them.

Also, the tractor would move a bit in neutral with the trans both in and out of gear. That went away too with the oil change out.

No... it is what I would consider normal... you do have to vary engine RPM up or down depending on your shift higher or lower gear...
The only difference I have seen is when it is below freezing, it is slower to engage the clutch pack, until the oil heats up (10 to 15 min at most)... and the delay would be just the opposite of what you are describing...
I understand that there is a valving adjustment in the GST clutch pack, that will feather the clutches... I have seen this a while back when reading about the clutch pack in the WSM... KennyV

Oil temperature should not be an issue (I don't think) as I keep the tractor in my garage and it is always above freezing. When I did check the oil level after the oil change it showed slightly above the fill line--not sure if that would be a factor? The tractor always shifted well in the past regardless of RPM. It's a funny thing though, as I used the same TSC fluid on my first trans/hydraulic oil change about 4 years ago and everything worked fine afterwards. Maybe TSC is getting their trans/hydraulic oil from a different manufacturer now?

Hate to sound like so unknowledgable here, but whatever I do change, I want to get it right on the first crack, as this can get expensive. If somthing new comes to mind guys, please comment.

Riverplace,

Before you just throw away your new oil, try a friction modifier (zinc additive package). Case Construction dealers used to carry it for their applications with wet brakes and clutches as the standard CE fluid did not have it as some of the older machines did not require a friction modifier.

If you are hearing any growling from the brakes or PTO that you did not have with the original Kubota fluid, likely that is all that is wrong with fluid.

Good luck!
