Tractor
Kubota L4400 4WD Hydrostat
Will farm ballpark 5 acres and have 5 Acre MX track. Possibly hay and possibly produce. Will have nursery, small vineyard, small orchard and a couple of greenhouses. Combination clay and sandy land.
MX track requires a lot of front end loader work and would like to have to be able to use a chisel plow on a regular basis and I think this is gonna be the determining factor. Flail Mower and possibly rotary mower (6 foot ideal). Everything else I know any of the tractors can handle (with exception of a round bailer which I don't really anticipate needing).

I can get both the 4wd hydrostat kubotas for the same price equipped equally well (added qa bucket to the 4400).
L4400 is down on weight (could compensate with ballast and get to the weight of the 3940), lift capacity (how do I determine how much I need?), hydraulics (where will this matter to me?), and features (what matters & what doesn't... Personally not much of a GADGET fan).
Grand L 3940 is down on HP, PTO HP.
John Deere is 40 HP and comparable to the Grand L 3940 but down on weight (630lbs less... but it's "shipping weight" on the JD), shorter wheel base by 5" (but larger turn radius), down on lift capacity by 550 lbs.... but the tractor is 2500 cheaper. Looks to be a very bare bones tractor (no telescopic stabilizers, standard hydro... whatever that means, no QA bucket, etc, etc).

Kubotas can be financed for 5yrs 0%. JD 3yrs 0% and up from there.

What do you think? What would you do?

I just purchased a Grand L 3940 and am extremely happy with it. I mow 2.5 acres with 6' finish mower and bush hog 18 acres with 6' rotary cutter. No power problems here and the cruise control is sweet. The only reason I chose a L3940 is this is the largest tractor you can put a 6' mid mount mower on, something I may consider in the future. The next tractor up, I think it is the L4240, has a heavier front axle to accomadate a larger front end loader. With the amount of loader work you meantion, you may want to consider that. Philip.

Phillip-
Thanks for the input. My budget is going to limit me to the 3940 in the grand series (unless I just can't do what I need to do with it). The loader work I need to do will just have to take extra time.

I'm hearing that chisel plow is out of the question with the 40 horse. Any opinion from you/others?

you might look at the kubota mx4700 or mx5100 they might be a better option

Normally it is figured that they take 15 to 20 horsepower per shank. There are some different types as well as depths to be run that also need to be considered but you could run one or two. Remember that they are normally on 15" or more spacing and they should be pulled at 5mph. This depends on the soil, snady will do more and heavy clay will pull less.

I'd second looking at the MX-Series.

FYI, the Kubota stuff also publishes shipping weight.

"Need" Hydrostatic Drive because of the amount of FEL work I'll be doing.

I think the only tractors in the Kubota Line with Hydrostat are the L and Grand L series.... correct?

I read over the L4400 on the Kubota site and was curious whether they offer the telescopic link ends? Not to be confused with the stabilizers for the hitch sway. On my tractor the link ends can be released to allow easier attachment to the implement hitch pins then reverse the tractor to make them slide back in and lock.

I use both telescopic link ends and IMatch, top and tilt and skidsteer loader attachments makes life alot more pleasant.

Steve

They are standard on the 4400 Kubota.

How do they work on the Kubota? Looking at the pictures I can see that the stabilizers can slide to allow swinging the hitch arms left or right. I can't see how the link ends would telescope though.
