Love this tractor, has 2200 hours on it. Maintenance all up to date. Upgrades, workshop manual, etc... At cold start up, sound like a bag of polished rocks being jiggled around. After engine warmed up, sound vanishes and tractor runs out smooth, under any and all loads.

No smoke other than common grunt smoke, no leaks, slight fuel additive for winter blend but it's almost gone thru that. All fluids appear normal. Ideas? Sound coming from center of engine area, more noticable on injector pump side. Bad injector? Just to be clear, it's not a knock knock knock, it's more like a rattle bag.....

I been running it anyway, zero sound on warm motor. Even at warm restart.

Anything......

Sounds like a pretty typical diesel to me.

sounds like typical diesel. When I did the 50 hr service on previous tractors I switched to Synthetic oil and that quieted down a lot of the noise. Just a thought.

Thats normal. You should hear my old peterbilt with a 400 Cat engine on a cold startup. Sounds like its coming apart for the first two or three mins, even shakes the ground around it. Then purrs like a kitten.

Only solution is trade it for a tractor with a gasoline engine as cold diesel engines rattle

Normal for sure, may want to consider a block heater for the colder months and don't skimp on the fuel additive .

Thanks for replies, block heater (plug) is a must and it works wonders for this unit. It would not start without it under 38 degrees. I may consider a sythetic oil but I always add large bottle of Lucas oil to Rotella T. I like the fuel comment. I use anti gel additive in winter only and use it lightly. I have no plans on getting rid of this tractor due to I know every creek and groan and have completed the DIY's required to keep it running correctly.

I just don't wanna tear it up! Thanks for replies.
