Just had new JD 790 with L4 rotary mower delivered yesterday-my first tractor (first time aboard tractor for gosh sakes!). Set about to mow stubble left from previous property owner's 2 acre hay field. Previous owner, an elderly Nebraska farm, boy had lovingly turned, planted, mowed, turned this field for years just for fun.
My question. Field is smooth of course but undulating and I had to constantly adjust mower height. Sometimes I would find I had left inch deep gouges from mower deck in depressions, sometimes left things a bit high over rises. What worries me is the noise. Sometimes a few small rocks would bang about beneath the deck if I got too close to the ground. Things are dry this at time in San Diego CA.
Have I ruined my brand new mower? Any general rules for mowing that I had better learn?
